Is there good snorkeling for free?

From the beaches in either Freeport or Nassau?? I'm cruising with a group of stubborn people, myself included, and I cant get anyone to commit to an excursion, and I wouldnt book it without them. Just in case we get on board and I finally get them to commit to something and we cant get onto some formal excursion, any chance we can see some good stuff from the beach?? or are the good spots only reachable by boat?
