I won't Auto-tip!! Some crew may or may not get screwed

Yes because the State's sales tax is not charged. Or is it a sail tax? The same is true for drink purchases.

Yeah I know, I was making a point about c**** people in response to the people who snickered at $0.75. I don't know why people think it's absurd to go after $0.75 when they'll go out of their way to save a buck and a half on a card.

You mean like those that wait for the cruiser to put down the Souvenir glass who doesnt know that they can keep it. They then pick it up and turn it in to get their next drink at the regular price but at the Souvenir glass size to save $2.

I have a quick tipping question...

If you actually get bad service from a crew member, is it possible to have their portion of the auto-tips adjusted? It's not the best way to handle the situation, I'm sure.

I'm just curious if that's possible?

I've yet to get anything close to what I would consider bad service, but if it were top happen, aside from complaining at the purser's desk, I wonder what recourse you would have?

Just a question MrPete....Who got that extra 75 cents added to their bill ?

I'll send it to them myself.........:D

I did.:)

My S&S had a .75 charge on it and since I had a bad experience with my Platinum VIP perks that week I decided to dispute it. The Credit card company instantly credited me for it and I have heard nothing since.

My big issue was with what cost's 75 cents?I still do not know if there is even 1 item on the whole ship that cost's that little.

We did the auto $10 per day per person and tipped extra. I think cheap people worry about where the money is going. If carnival states they are distributing them out lets trust them. quote]

Then are you opposed to it being part of the fare?

Is it right that the cruiseline devised a way to give the crew less?

When you tipped in cash, they got it all.

Are you aware that the autotips are a way to pay more crew?

It used to be Waiter, busboy, and Steward. Now they added Bistro to it.

Steve

Include it all in the fare

I swore I would not enter this subject again, BUT tipping provides incentive to provide outstanding service. "May or may not" is the most ambiguous comment possible. It literally means nothing. This guy obviously has an agenda to validate his behavior.

I don't know if you are aware, but the Original title of this thread is not mine. A host must have changed it.

I seriously doubt that a host changed the title. I know some personally and cruised with them. In fact when you post a thread, it instantly appears on the board exactly as you type it. Hosts are not reviewing every post as it appears. There is no waiting period so that the post can be reviewed and/or edited.

I really don't see why you are so upset Steveaaa. The article in no way, shape or form say that the intended people don't get what they are intended to get. It points out that it COULD happen, and it doesn't say it happens with Carnival. To come on here and try to drop a bomb is just an attempt to stir the pot and so far you have done that. That is nothing more than you being a troll. With that being said, I also find it hard to believe that the number of times I have cruised and have run into the same servers, cabin steward and bar tenders that Carnival must be taking care of their employees. I don't think that people would stick around for being screwed over in this day and time.

Poor Stevea's,

First the cruiselines are stealing the employees tips. Which he thinks will be corrected by including tips in the fare, giving the cruiselines 60 to 90 days to float the tip money or further screw with it. I don't quite unnerstan dat fix.

Then the board POLICE are changing his verbiage. WOW, its obvious that he's paranoid, but is he paranoid enough with ALL these conspiracies swirling around him?

I certainly have NO desire to play devil's advocate but:

THE THREAD TITLE HAS BEEN ENTIRELY CHANGED.

I assume cruisecritic did not like OP's choice of words as a title to his thread. Unlike to what someone else just posted, you CANNOT change/edit the TITLE of a thread once you have posted it. You can only change/edit the message and again, only like within 20 minutes of it appearing online. Once the EDIT button disappears, you no longer have the ability of editing your message. Only cruisecritic can do that, period. And the title of this thread was edited overnight.

 You've actually seen people do that? That's not only cheap, it's pretty gross too...

I changed it.....everytime a post states something strong with no proof, it is a flame toward that person or company so I got the facts out of the thread....1, The OP said he "won't" autotip... 2, maybe there are some crew getting shorted - maybe they're not....It "could" happen.....but then maybe it "hasn't".......With no proof, it's speculation and not fair to the cruiseline to be flamed in a title without real proof.

The thread title WAS changed...don't remember what it was, but somebody did change it.

For the record:

"Don't Auto-tip!! It appears the crew does get screwed"

Just curious -- how many of us agonize like this over the tip we leave on the table in our local restaurant? Or to the cocktail waitress or dealer in a casino? Or the cabbie to the vacation resort, or the bellman at the resort?

In short, why does this get discussed over and over here as though tipping on a cruise ship is some sort of novelty the cruise line forces on us exclusively?

Anyone who thinks paying $10. a day for the unbelievable job the crew of most ships do is somehow over the top should simply quit cruising. And for that matter they should quit riding in cabs to the airport, eating out or going to bars or clubs where they are served. Believe me the servers won't miss you.

Those folks on the ship work approx 10-12 hour shift, most 7 days a week for 6 month stretches waiting on your every whim and changing your dirty sheets. To complain about tipping them a measly $10. per day that must be shared between the wait staff, Maitre'd, cabin steward, laundry staff and others is unbelievable. If you make a good enough living to cruise regularly, take care of the folks who take such good care of you while you do. Give 'em at least the recommended gratuities. I believe if you recive exceptional service you should add significantly more.

Cheers, Neil

Ok, we just finished our 1st ever cruise, and I have a tipping question, being new at this:

We did not adjust the "auto-tip", which was $10 per person, per day for my wife & I ($100 total for a five day cruise).

On our last night of the cruise, I gave our maitre'd $35 cash, our drinks waitress in the dining room $20 cash, and our steward $25 cash.

So here is my question - are those amounts OK? I mean, I know you can be a cheap-a$$ and not tip at all, but I want to take care of the people who took care of us all week, and I just don't know what the "going rate" is for tipping on the ship - did we rip off our service staff, or are those numbers OK?

I want to make sure I know this before our next cruise, which if my DW has anything to say about it, will be very soon!

In short, why does this get discussed over and over here

Because it is a Fantasy chat board and you can post about anything over and over and over again.

There are key topics which are debated purely for the fun of it as that is what keeps this board running. The ads pay for the board and the more threads there are, thus the more clicks on the additional ads.It actually helps CC.

If you want to help out:D ,these are the biggies...

Tipping

Jeans in the dining room

Diapers in the pool

Smoking on board

Steve

PS. Host, thanks for posting that you did alter the thread title.

You did great and probably more than alot of folks would have- including me!! I do tip the waitstaff/barstaff/stewards very well, but I never feel inclined to tip the Maitre'd since they usually only come around on the last night shaking hands expecting a tip for doing nothing extraordinary all week long.

Ok, my bad......... I guess it wasn't the maitre'd - the guy I gave the $35 was the guy who slid in our chairs when we sat, took our orders, answered questions about the menu, said "Big Moo" everytime I ordered a medium rare steak and generally pampered the living daylights out of us - is that maybe the headwaiter?
