Luggage during long layover

While looking at some flights (getting ideas for next year) I noticed that a lot of (the cheaper) flights from Cape Town, South Africa stop in Johannesburg for a few hours (2-4) and then in Paris for 18-22 hours before continuing on to a connecting flight to Boston. My question: is the luggage stored or kept during a very long layover (18-22 hours) or must it be picked up and rechecked in for the connecting flight. In case it makes a difference, the airline in question is Air France.

Additionally, if the luggage must be picked up, is there somewhere at CDG where it can be stored?
