Vancouver -- Stanley Park

Recommended Posts

We will have 2 1/2 days in Vancouver before our cruise departs on June 8. One of the places we definitely want to visit in Vancouver is Stanley Park, touring around the park, stopping in several locations. We just saw online that the Stanley Park shuttle bus service does not begin until June 19. :-( Does that mean that if we do not want to walk the whole way (Whew!), we must rent a car? One of us has not been on a bicycle in MANY years, so that's not an option. There is a horse-drawn carriage ride, but that's only for 2 hours and I assume that's a fixed route with no stops.

where's your hotel? it's likely not far to the park.

  • you can catch a city bus there
  • both the jump on/jump off tourist tours go through the park with several stops (set price for the day...go to as many places as you'd like) big bus http://www.bigbus.ca/ and vancouver trolley http://www.vancouvertrolley.com/
  • if you're downtown already - you can walk to stanley park in 1/2 hour or so along the waterfront
  • many people rent bicycles downtown and tour the park on bikes
  • you can catch a cab there

Thank you. We'll be at the Marriott Pinnacle. Wasn't concerned about getting to the park, but getting around it once we arrived. Good to know that the jump on/jump off buses stop in places in the park. I had the impression that they just dropped you off at the entrance, counting on the park shuttle (that won't be running when we are there) to take folks around inside. Bikes would be a great idea but DH says he hasn't ridden one in 40 years and doesn't think this would be the time. Just to know, is the park farely level, or up and down hills?

The park can be pretty hilly in areas, when we were there a couple of weeks ago some of the seawall walk was still closed because of storm debris.

Just in case anyone does decide to do the bike thing, you have to hire them outside the park and ride there, they don't actually have rental places inside the park.

Rentals are just outside the Park mostly on Denman St just off Georgia. Across th street and you are in the Park System.

Does that mean that we can't walk the circumference? Can we walk to the totems? To Prospect Point? Would you recommend walking clockwise or counterwise? Which way is more of the walk open?

You are able to walk the seawall from the west and the east but the part near/closer to the First Narrows is closed so one can not do a circuit. Either side is still a great walk. West likely would be my choice.

They are working on it and things are changing all the time.
