62 Cruiser Posted May 28, 2007 #1 Share Posted May 28, 2007 The couple we are traveling with have a 17 yr old son and he is taking a friend who recently turned 18. Can they still hang together at the teen disco?

Cotton Posted May 28, 2007 #4 Share Posted May 28, 2007 From what I hear, they check IDs and are very strict about ages that can go into certain places. They'll just have to hang together on the rest of the ship.:)
62 Cruiser Posted May 28, 2007 Author #5 Share Posted May 28, 2007 That is probably going to really stink for them. We are going to ask...worse they can say is no and we are where we are now.
Chigirlcruzin Posted May 28, 2007 #6 Share Posted May 28, 2007 It depends. On the Miracle in December, they didn't check IDs. I know for a fact there were 17 year olds in Dr Frankenstein's. On the Imagination earlier this month, they were checking IDs and were strict.
62 Cruiser Posted May 28, 2007 Author #7 Share Posted May 28, 2007 We'll just have to see... He will have just graduated from HS and his friend is a rising senior. but rules are rules and we will abide by them IF we have to. :D Seriously, I understand why they do it that way. Chigirlcruzin Posted May 28, 2007 #8 Share Posted May 28, 2007 Honestly, I would think 18-20 would be the worst ages to cruise. There aren't too many other passengers on board in that age range, they can't drink, though they can go to all of the lounges and gamble.
Water Baby 1983 Posted May 28, 2007 #9 Share Posted May 28, 2007 Cruising from ages 16-20 was not as fun, if you ask me, but hey -- a cruise is still a cruise, and having a friend on board makes ALL the difference.

My girls 19 & 20 , found lots of things to do and you wouldn't believe how many friends they found. I think it all depends on what time of the year you cruise. They are old enought to do everything except drink on the ship.
Chigirlcruzin Posted May 28, 2007 #11 Share Posted May 28, 2007 My first cruise was in 1995 after I graduated from high school. Back then, you only had to be 18 to sail without a guardian, and 18 to drink. I went with 2 friends, and we had the BEST time. But, like I said, we could drink, and we had no parents. Thinking back, they changed the policy for a reason;)
RosieRoo Posted May 29, 2007 #12 Share Posted May 29, 2007 The only places that I know of that you are not allowed under 18 are the casino and the disco. On the past few cruises we have done on Carnival they have had a security officer checking ids outside the disco and they were evry strict about the age thing. They would not allow my 17 year old daughter inside even accompanied by her parents.
msbr Posted May 29, 2007 #13 Share Posted May 29, 2007 I think it depeds on the time of the year. Spring break, summer break and other peak "family" or "student" times all cruiselines seem to be much more aware of ID and age, from children's camps to discos and adult pool areas. This really seems to be a hit or miss type thing.
cali-croozer Posted May 29, 2007 #14 Share Posted May 29, 2007 On the Conquest, my then 17 year old son made some friends on board that were 18. The 18 year olds were able to hang out at Club 02 to listen to music if they wanted, but anyone under 18 was not allowed into the regular disco (IDs checked at the door). 62 Cruiser Posted May 29, 2007 Author #15 Share Posted May 29, 2007 The 18yr old would go to O2. The 17yr old doesn't want to be seen with his parents at the adult disco. That was why I was asking. Can the 18 yr old hang with the 17 yr old at O2? From what I'm gathering from everyone....it's hit or miss. Am I reading everyone right?

Like I posted, my sons friends were able to hang out there as they weren't checking IDs. It all depends on the counselor. And, if they are getting a lot of younger kids trying to hang out there in the evening (under 15s) they might start checking IDs and then the 18 year olds are out too. Don't worry too much about this as I bet they won't spend too much time in there in the evening anyway. At that age, they'll probably enjoy some of the other entertainment on the ship, like the comedy shows.

I'm 19 and basically the only thing I can't do is drink at least not on the ship Kinda sucks for those under 21 who want to drink on the ship....there are WAY too many bars and drinking places, good grief.....HOW many tipsy people are walking the ships at night:eek: It's like everywhere you turn there's some place to drink, wow I'm sure I'll have plenty to laugh at:p We're leaving Sunday and that's right at the beginning of June so I'm sure there will be lots of just graduated seniors and many are already 18 which is great for me and some are even 19...so I'm excited:D
Chigirlcruzin Posted May 29, 2007 #20 Share Posted May 29, 2007 I cruise Carnival in '94 and '98 and I was sure it was 21:confused: It would have been in '98, but not '94. I was 18 in 1995, and sailed only with 2 other 18 year olds. Drinking age was 18 as well. The age requirement changed sometime between July 1995 and March 1996. I did a spring break cruise in March 1996 with 19 sorority sisters:eek: . We were all 19 or 20. Our cruise docs stated the current policy, but we booked before they changed it, so we were able to still go as we were "grandfathered" in. The drinking age was also changed to 21, but they did not enforce that. Not sure if it was because of the whole grandfathering, or because the staff just didn't want to lose out on the sales/tips since 80% of the ship was college students.
