Pilot, The local person from shore who is responsible to bring the ship into and out of the Port of Call. He/She is the one who jumps onto the little boat that comes alongside and then goes away.

On our last cruise, we were talking with a lady while standing at the rail on the Promenade Deck. We were watching the Pilot boat snuggle up to the side of the ship and then pull away. She wondered what they were doing and when I told her they were picking up the Pilot, she looked at me like I was deranged. She actually took a few steps to get away from me. After all, ships don't fly.
