An amazing find

Bychance - I think you have made a wise decision to discontinue with the reading and turning of pages of this special document. I think I would put it somewhere, out of the dust and light - maybe wrap it in a pillowcase or something......until you talk to some folks who really know about antique documents, storage, restoration, value, etc. But do follow up on finding out the value of it or estimated value.......there are some great auction houses with some of the best experts in the business.

Thank you for your input maybe you can help me find the right person for the job. Iam not really sure where to begin. If this journal is nothing more than great history Iam okay with that if it's priceless that would be great too.

But the friend who gave it to me told me that it is worth more to me than anyone else!

He might be right cuz I am loving this!

ByChance - Two of the best auction houses in my opinion are Sothebys and Christies.

www.sothebys.com www.christies.com

Their web sites are extensive and fascinating and will lead you in the right direction. At the top of the page of each site you will see titles such as "How to buy and sell" and "Specialist". Between the two, someone should be able to tell you if you have something of interest and value, or they can point you in the right direction. Beware of any small time dealers. You need to start with the best and go from there. "In my humble opinion". ;) gg

I love antiques books, there is an Annette L. Noble from the late 1800, who was a writer, one of the books she wrote is called the Parsonage secret, written in 1898, it's a pretty intense book to be written that long ago. I wonder if she is the same writer?

I live in California and have used antique book binders, here is the best one i know of:

Not sure what state you live in but i am sure the folks at the store above can recommend a professional in your area.

The name of the ship was the S.S. City of New York.

I thought that name sounded familiar. She's the ship that was pulled from its mooring as the Titanic was passing her in port.

Interesting what Titanic's fate would have been had the two ships collided.

You have been getting some excellent advice from some of our posters. Look at www.amazon.com and type in Annette L. Noble. There are two books listed that she has written:

"Eleanor Willoughby's Self" 1870

"A History of the First Presbyterian Church of Albion, New York for one hundred years 1854-1924"

If this is the same person whose journal you have......how fascinating. It would appear that she was an author prior to her journey on the New York. Thank you for sharing with us......very exciting. gg

I saw on a Yahoo search, that Annette Noble had an "article" published in a magazine, THE NATION, entitled Love and Shawlstraps. The two dates given for it were June 7, 1894 and August 2, 1894. It appears it was part of a fictional series. "The Nation" is still a published magazine, a political magazine and you can find its website on line. Go to the bottom of the page and their is an area where you can contact them with your information if you desire. The value of your journal will be in who is interested in it........ a connection, whether it be via cruiselines, ship historian, or people, like THE NATION who have some type of interest. You may decide to keep your journal forever, but you do need to know its value, for safekeeping/storage/insurance, etc. Pretty darn exciting. gg

What a thoughtful gift that was! I hope you enjoy it fully. It would be useful to find out how to preserve it. IF you have an interest in selling it (or might have an interest if the price is right), an appraisal would be a great idea. If you want to keep it, then it makes more sense to me to spend your money on preserving it than on insuring it. After all, you won't be able to take money from the insurance company and replace it. Documenting it with photos, scans, or whatever is an additional or alternate way of preserving the content, if not the book itself.

May it bring you great pleasure, whatever you decide to do with it. Hey, maybe you can fully document its contents, then sell it and pay for a cruise with the proceeds. . . .

Margie,

Thanks for your interest in the journal. As I don't want to flood the boards with this thread I hope you will tell the people on the boards you visit about this thread.

I have read these boards for a long time. And I have not seen some of the long time posters and cruisers comment on this. I can think of at least 5 posters that I would like to hear thier opinion of this.

To me this is so very cool, and want everybody who might think this is cool to see it!!

Bychance,

Great job on the webshots posting. Reading through the document is fascinating and goosebumpy. It's like a mystery novel that drops intriguing clues (i.e., like the reference to Walter Besant and "Katherine Regina". That got me googling!) At times, the journal may be somewhat mundane but I enjoy the little insights it gives of life in "those days."

It makes me wonder about my journals of our vacations. Where will they end up 100 to 150 years from now. Will someone at that time also receive them as a gift and be similarly entranced? Thanks for sharing your treasure. I look forward to the next "installment."

bychance,

I was just able to sit down and look through the webshots that you made. Wonderful find. One thing I would tell you is NOT to do anything to the binding, etc until after you have talked with the expert at Christie's. One thing that is usually said on Antiques Roadshow is that you should never restore antiques. It takes away from the value of the antique. But, check with the expert at Christie's.

Please let me add my thanks for your generosity in copying and sharing this journal. I have bookmarked the photo site so that I can read it all when I have time to do so completely. What a wonderful find! I have some old journals that were in my family, and I have kept a journal off and on since the 1970s. This has inspired me to do so again, as perhaps my descendants will find them of interest...after I'm gone, of course...
