budbuddies Posted June 7, 2007 Author #3 Share Posted June 7, 2007 I just found the date on this "guide"-1994----on the map though it shows it right between the Pompey Museum & Straw Market... The description says-"sells watches and jewellery made from the popular shell. The workmanship is of exceptional quality, and you can also find here many lovely pieces fashioned from coral." -BUT this being an older guide I was wondering if it was even still around...... My husband was born in Key West and thought it might be a neat place to visit?????:o ..
Rare nellydean Posted June 7, 2007 #4 Share Posted June 7, 2007 conch is an endangered species, having been overfished in the caribbean, and it is currently illegal for americans to purchase it from certain caribbean countries, although I think there is a still a quota from the bahamas, so you may be lucky personally, I would leave well alone
nanfromatlanta Posted June 7, 2007 #5 Share Posted June 7, 2007 I doubt that it is still there. The straw market burned down a few years ago, and has been moved to a new location. They also demolished a few other buildings which were in that immediate area.
