Car Rental vs. Taxi

I finally have all of the last details together. Return flight, pre-cruise hotel, post cruise hotel, etc. My last decision is whether it makes sense to rent a car for post-cruise transportation. I'll be staying in Coral Gables, would like to maybe see the University of Miami (which I understand is not too far away) and then maybe hit South Beach. Does it make better sense to rent a car (incurring rental cost, gas and parking) or just to catch a cab everywhere? I'll just be staying for one day (Sunday) and flying out on Monday morning. Any advice?
