Deep Sea Fishing Charters?

Any suggestions for fishing charters in Cozumel? My dad is a seasoned fisherman--years of deep sea fishing off of Canaveral and in the Bahamas. He wants a true fishing trip--not just a boat ride and we're afraid that's what we'd get with the cruise excursions. (This is our first cruise--we're on RC's Enchantment in two weeks.) Are we wrong to discount the excursion options? Can you recommend a charter captain, preferably an English-speaking one?

Thank you,

Julie

p.s. What happens to the fish you catch?

Most captains and deck-hands speak conversational English. He will interact more with the deck-hand than the captain however so that will be most important.

Any billfish caught should be immediately released. If your dad is a seasoned fishermen, he'll understand and support that effort we call "catch and release" in hopes of increasing quantities of sport fish in the Mexican Caribbean, but it should be a Worldwide conservation effort.

Eating fish are for the client, but most cruise ships will not allow the fish to be brought on board. You can take it to Tony Rome's Embassy restaurant and he'll fix up a grand meal for the group with discounted rates for supplying your own catch. Returning it to the States is really not an option here.

Google "fishing Cozumel" or any derivative of that and check with two or three companies. The ones taking tourists on boat rides generally don't survive and most don't have a web presence. Exchange a few emails and you will soon know if you are dealing with a good operator.

The companies that cater to the cruise lines are selling “individual spaces” and your dad may be with seasoned fishermen or he may be with a group that have never caught a fish before. Booking direct on your own, you’ll be on a private charter experience; typically much better for “fishermen”.

My husband used these guys for two different fishing trips when we were in Coz last month. He had nothing but good things to say about them. They paid for a full 8 hours and on the first trip, they were on their way in but hit another big group of fish and so stayed out for another 3 hours. My husband has fished wherever we vacation, and he said these guys really enjoy what they do and want to catch the fish as much as the customer. :) They brought back enough mahi and tuna for 3 or 4 dinners, and there were 6 of us.
