Pride of Hawaii --> Jade Conversion Game

Recommended Posts

Here's a fun game to train your eyes and memory, compare the deck plans of Pride of Hawaii and Jade and see if you can spot the differences.

I'll go first: the 6th deck cabins on PoH have been converted to a casino. That's a surprise, I thought it would be the "Business center / meeting rooms" that would turn into the casino.

No real surprise - same space for the casino as all her sister ships. The conference rooms would make one very small casino - Face it they make far more money from that space as a casino then from cabins. ;)

I didn't think your assumption would be correct, 'cause those Sixth Deck cabins is where the casino was on the Norwegian Jewel, it's closest sister ship.

While all six NCL ships at 92,000 gross tons were built at Meyerwerft have the same hull and propulsion plants deep within, they were ordered and built in pairs, and each pair have minor differences from the other pairs.

Star and Dawn, Jewel and Jade (ex-POH), Pearl and Gem are sisters of one another, but the ships in the pair groups are almost identical to one another.

Removing the Business Center on the Jade to make room for the casino would have left the Jewel and Jade odd sisters.

Better in the long run to make them as similiar as possible.

Imagine how many more passengers NCLA could have accomodiated in these cabins, yet these extra passengers could not make up for the casino profits and expenses operating under the American flag in Hawaii.

Sorry if this is off topic but I do think it's sort of related to the change. I just booked the repo cruise for February - Los Angeles to Miami via Panama Canal. Do you think the employee base will change? I haven't seen that info anywhere.

Definitely - no need to employ an expensive American crew when the ship is not sailing under a US flag.

The crew will change probably while in L.A. between February 7 and February 16. The Pride of Hawaii's Hawaiian Escape repo cruise starts on January 28 and arrives in L.A. on February 7, is listed under POH. The Panama Canal cruise starting on February 16, 2008 is listed under Norwegian Jade.

With the name change comes the flag and crew change.

I suppose some of the old POH American Crew could stay on and join NCL. Of course that would mean a pay cut down to the International pay level which I'm guessing, most won't take. I imagine most will be reassigned to the POA or POAm.

Interesting thought here....

Wouldn't it make sense for NCL to put the International Jade crew on the ship in Honolulu before the repo to the west coast instead of having to fly the old POH crew back to Honolulu?

From the way I understand it, the POH will enter a wet dock in Hawaii for the conversion to the Jade and then sail to LA. Won't she be renamed while in the wet dock?

But I suppose she has to stay the POH in order to sail directly from Honolulu to LA without a stop in Mexico due to the Jones Act.

When will there be time for a wet dock? Checking the rest of the POH schedule in Hawaii, there aren't any gaps.

Pride of Hawaii, 7-Day Hawaii, Round-trip Honolulu

2007: July 2, 9, 16, 23, 30; August 6, 13, 20, 27; September 3, 10, 17, 24; October 1, 8, 15, 22, 29; November 5, 12, 19, 26; December 3, 10, 17, 24, 31 2008: January 7, 14, 21

Pride of Hawaii, 12-Day Hawaiian Escape, Honolulu to Los Angeles

2008: January 28

While a wet dock can be performed in Honolulu, I believe it will take more than a few hours every week to perform.

If the flag change occurred prior to the repo cruise to L.A. the repo cruise would have to disembark passengers in Ensenada, not L.A.

I don't think it really matters whether NCL flys the American crew back to Honolulu or fly an International crew to Honolulu.

Tickets for the flights would cost NCL the same.

If the ship sails from Honolulu to Los Angeles she will be sailing from one American port to another American port--that is only allowed for American-flagged ships, so I think the ship will remain the Pride of Hawaii (with the American crew) on that trip. The LA to Panama trip is to a foreign port, so it need not be on an American-flagged ship, hence, the Norwegian Jade (with a non-American crew) can handle that leg.

All valid points. I read on the NCL news release about the change, the words "after a short wet dock in Hawaii." The Press releases also say this is a "temporary" removal. Doesn't sound to temporary if you are removing cabins! (of course, it could jsut be Colin talking out of both sides of his mouth as usual to say things that all want to hear.)

Here is a link to the NCL press release calling the move temporary:

Here is a link to the NCL press release where they say there will be a "wet dock" in February to reflag her:

On the April 10 press release, "....today announced the temporary withdrawal of Pride of Hawai`i from the Hawai`i market effective February 2008." and "that a temporary retrenchment is the right thing to do for the good of the business and the good of Hawai`i i....to achieve acceptable profitability before we can confidently re-introduce Pride of Hawai`i."

All I see is withdrawing and reintroducing her to the "Hawaii market", which can be done under an International flag as a NCL ship. I will admit they suggested it by continuing to use the POH name, but at this point they hadn't announced its new name N. Jade.

On the April 16 press release, "Pride of Hawai`i will continue her seven-day roundtrip Honolulu cruises through the January 28, 2008 cruise. The ship will enter wet dock on February 6 where she will receive modifications including the addition of a casino and new hull artwork. The ship will be re-named Norwegian Jade and will be showcased during inaugural events in both Los Angeles and Miami. After a series of repositioning cruises, the ship will arrive in Barcelona for her first 12-day cruise beginning on March 30, 2008."

Again, NCL didn't state "where" the ship will enter wet dock, just "when", on Feb 6. Since this press release, we have learned via its corrected schedules that the POH starts the 12 day repo cruise on Jan 28 vice another 7 day cruise, and can't enter wet dock until it reaches L.A.

I don't think NCL has been giving false information on purpose, but was releasing information, before setting up every little detail, about the major itinerary changes for this ship.

Much like the press releases about the SS Norway in mid and late 2003, the real world lives in a state where changes in plans occur.

Ron: Below is what I copied directly from the NCL Press release. That is why I was under the impression the wet dock would be in Hawaii.

Miami - Apr 16, 2007 --- Today, NCL Corporation announced that it will place three of its newest Jewel-class ships in Europe beginning in March 2008 in response to increased consumer demand for European cruises. The company will re-flag Pride of Hawai`i into the Bahamas registry and re-name her Norwegian Jade after a short wet dock in Honolulu in February 2008.

Sorry, I missed that sentence within the first paragraph, badly  .

Never-the-less, apparently NCL found they could do it cheaper in L.A. or wanted to have a repo cruise disembark at L.A. vs Ensenada, and changed their plans; after this press release was released. Besides changing the location and timing of the wet dock, they have also changed the Jan 28 itinerary from a 7 day roundtrip to a 12 day repo.

As I stated before, the "real" world includes changes of previous made plans.
