Yukon Posted February 9, 2011 #76 Share Posted February 9, 2011 Wow, so it could be frozen May 6 and completed thawed out 8 days later? If there's ice on May 6th it will be very rotten but enough to cover up the emerald colour. It's not unknown for the Emerald Lake area to be the hottest place in Canada in late May :)
Yukon Posted February 9, 2011 #77 Share Posted February 9, 2011 When I reserved the car from Sourdough for May 6, he told me that the roads up towards Emerald Lake would most likely be snow covered ... That's just not true. Even over the summit, there "could be" snow on the road but it's certainly not "most likely". The dated photos at http://www.explorenorth.com/bc/fraser.html will give you an idea of what May looks like at Fraser, just north of the summit - lots of snow still on the ground but bare and dry roads. He admitted that he hadn't been there in a while, so I am glad you are confident we won't be driving on snow covered roads. From what your saying it might be thawed, but no guarantee. What are the odds we might get lucky? Still worth the drive, right? Pretty scenery from the photos on your site. Thanks again for your help! all smiles Posted February 9, 2011 #79 Share Posted February 9, 2011 To add on to what MercedMike said about the treatment od sled dogs, another reason I've learned that they keep the dogs on chains is so that they dont run free and mate...apparantly many of the dogs aren't fixed so the kennels would be overflowing with puppies if the dogs weren't restained in some sort of way! jody Posted February 10, 2011 #80 Share Posted February 10, 2011 We've decided to rent a car during our early June stop in Skagway. We almost booked Chilkoot, but decided that we could save money and be more flexible with a car. It seems that everyone who has rented a car has had a good experience with it. Our cameras are ready and we can't wait for our trip.

Don't forget to download "Murrays Guide" this spring, it will help you choose the best places to stop and view along the way etc. We will be doing the same in June.
