Concerned about Princess

We are going on our fifth cruise, first on Princess. We are Brits, not very keen on the auto tipping but certainly intend to leave them on. However, my husband wears a smart suit and tie for work every day, and therefore always wears a tux on formal nights so he doesn't feel he is going to work. Likewise I always do the 'gown thing'. Reading all the threads about formal nights, will we stand out like a sore thumb and be overdressed? Our very first cruise was on RCCL Radiance of the seas. It was a lovely ship, but after dinner on a formal night, a lady in shorts in the casino asked hubby to mend her machine, assuming that because somebody had a tux on after dinner he must be a croupier! Am I worrying unnecessarily?

Yes, I think you are. We found that people on Princess tend to dress up more on formal night. You will be fine. Most men wear dark suits however, there are always many in a tux and gowns are seen as well. Some people tend to change back into casual clothes after dinner also. Have a great cruise. Princess is very nice. :)

Not to worry, you will find a large variety of passengers on Princess, many of whom enjoy dressing up. All of the Princess cruises that I have been on had many fellow passengers dressed in formal attire. And the ships themselves are quite elegant, so you will not feel out of place. Bless you and others who, like myself, enjoy dressing for festive occasions!

We also dress up on formal nights. We go back and change clothes into casual when we go to the casino and shows after eating.

I love to dress up for formal nights. My husband tolerate it. He can't stand a tie on his neck, it choaks him, but after he is in the dinning room all suited up with coat and tie, the tie is removed. Only beclose it choaks him.

oh nearly forgot, go and see the forward cruise lady and get a letter, it lasts for 4 years and when you book your next Princess cruise the deposit is only £75 each and you get $200 on board credit for a 12 night cruise, you use your regular tour operator - bargain.

What ship are booked on?

Thanks for the replies and advice Britisharecoming (what a great nickname!) We are booked on the Pacific Princess in September to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversay. We cruise from Honolulu to Papeete. Apart from one cruise on RCCL, we have only been on P & O before, twice on Oceana and once on Artemis. When is your next cruise?

Sounds like a great cruise. I think you will be pleasantly surprised by how much you like Princess. Have fun.

I wear my tux, and DW wears a beautiful gown, and we feel like the stars! There are plenty of tuxes on Princess, although there will also be all styles of dress all down the line. After dinner, probably the majority of people do change into casual clothes. We don't, and we feel elegant.

Actually, that one is my Dickensian frock coat and puff tie. I feel sharp in that one too.

You are going to love Princess! You will look great! Don't worry, be happy!

Have a GREAT cruise!

My DH and I love getting dressed up.

He wears his tux and I wear usually a dressy black dress.

I must say we are just back from the Crown Princess 6/17-6/26 and MANY were NOT in tux but had dark suits.

Enjoy your trip that is the MOST important

Agreed with previous poster - you will not stand out and in fact will fit right in with the vast majority. It's only a few folks who dress down on Princess and frankly they're the ones who stand out. My mom and I always wear gowns on formal nights and often wear cocktail type outfits on casual nights.

Well, I understand about taking off the tie if it is choaking him. That could be fatal. Has he considered losinging the knot a bit?

Or perhaps, it is the top button on his shirt. I know those bother me too. I either buy a bigger neck size shirt or have the button moved over.

Yes. My DH always wears a tux on formal night and I wear a long or short cocktail dress.

All of our Princess cruises have been 10 days or more [mostly 14 and 15] and can be different than 7 day cruises. On the longer cruises, I'd guess somewhere between 60 and 80% of the men were in tuxes. Far higher % than on 7 day cruises we've taken on other lines. But even then a couple in tux and grown would definitely not be overdressed.

Hi Pennysue,

You will love Princess if you have been on P & O you will find many things similar but different as well. I for one do not put the bow tie on when taking a short cruise around the UK with Princess, for Christmas cruise and longer cruises it is a must.

I would say that Princess ships just have a little bit more life to them than P & O ships, but they are not loud flash affairs like some cruise lines, they have a nice mix on old and new style which allows you to pick your own spot on the ship.

Have a great cruise. Please tell us all about it when you get home

yours Shogun

Sorry to hear that happened to you on RCCL. We sailed on Rhapsody of the Seas and there were sooooooooo many men with tux on. I can not understand why anyone would assume your DH was the 'help' because he had on a tux.

We are going on our first cruise with Princess in Oct. so I am glad to read that MANY pax dress 'to the nines' on formal night. We plan to!
