Driving up Haleakala

You'll be fine in your convertible...just make sure you know how to put the top up before you drive away from the rental agency. It can be cloudy and misty or rainy anywhere on the drive. It can also be sunny and dry.

The following information applies to BOTH Haleakla and The Road to Hana...

First, be POLITE! and RELAX on the drive. It's almost a native custom on Maui to pull over to let people pass if there are more than two cars behind you. Otherwise, suffer the wrath of the god Pele!

For Haleakla - Be ready for a long, slow trip up and down the hill, about 3 - 4 hours round trip (not including stops for photos, etc.).

For Hana - About 4 - 5 hours round trip. Ditto on the long, slow part.

In both cases, the roads are paved, and they actually have those little line "thingies" painted on the road! It's narrow in spots, but not too bad.

Hope this helps!

You can stop in Kula and see the botanical gardens on the way back down - the whole area is gorgeous! There is a restaurant that has an art gallery if you just want to stop and stretch your legs! Ulapalakua is nice too! And if you have time stop by the Tedeschi vinyard. All good ones for that day of driving around there. (Kula is where the Maui sweet onions are grown) - have fun!
