Child signature on passport

My child has a passport, he is 3 and obviously can not sign his passport. I looked on the gov. website but could not find anything about this....does anybody know what they do in that case, is it overlooked because he can't sign the passport or what???

I printed the childs name & then signed as parent. We have been on 4 cruise's since getting the passports and have never been questioned about the way we signed it. Our kids were 2 & 5 on our first cruise.

I don't really know what the real answer is. I'd recommend calling the Passport office for the real answer

 

nitz64's answer seems to be reasonable and has common sense, however, we all know that government policies don't always understand or go by common sense.

Here is the answer from US Department of State site:

 

My child is too young to sign his/her own passport. How do I sign my child's passport?

In the space provided for the signature, the mother or father must print the child's name and sign their own name. Then, in parenthesis by the parent's name, write the word (mother) or (father) so we know who signed for the child.
