civitavecchia transfers

We are curious as to the best mode of transportation from FCO to the pier in Civitavecchia. We had a horrible experience at the airport last time and are hesitant to arrange transportation after we land. We have also heard that there can be a signifcant wait for the Celebrity transfers. Any suggestions? Please email eandmburke@aol.com

Is a wonderful man who owns/manages a fleet of top-notch cars driven by professional, immaculate, prompt drivers. You can find his details on the destinations board. Sister in law and I used him 3 times last year and his performance was top-notch - not a mis-step anywhere. You will not regret contacting him (English is excellent).

I highly recommend Roma Shuttle, http://romashuttle.com/ , for transfers from FCO to Civitavecchia. We recently returned from a cruise beginning and ending in Rome and booked Roma Shuttle for three trips: from FCO to CV, CV to our hotel in Rome, and then from the hotel to FCO. For each trip, they met us at the exact time we specified and the drivers were courteous and helpful, although two of the three spoke English about as good as our Italian, which isn't much.

Our recent Celebrity transfer went OK. There was indeed some confusion initially at FCO but we were on the coach soon enough, and it left for Civitavecchia soon after that. However, the coach was very hot and unfortunately it suffered a bit of an accident - when approaching a motorway toll barrier for the usual roll-through (the coaches all have automatic passes that need to be scanned) the barrier suddenly came back down right in front of the coach, which hit it and bent it back at a complete right-angle. No-one was hurt but the coach then had to wait about 40 minutes for a police officer to arrive so the incident could be formally reported. So this was a slow and hot journey, but we got there.

The coach transfer back at the end of the cruise was very easy indeed, and very comfortable.

On a previous cruise we took the Leonardo Express (train) to Roma Termini (from where we had arranged a seat on a coach booked by our CruiseCritic's contact group) and this was OK - fast, clean, and cheap enough. And on the return on that cruise we did it by train all the way, changing at Termini. Again, do-able, but we only had one bag each (plus hand-luggage) and we're fairly fit. With more luggage, or for people with physical problems, I think the trains would be very difficult.

We used rome in limo http://www.romeinlimo.com for our tour of Rome last week. They were wonderful (Carlo) They were also booked to do our post cruise transfers in Rome from the train station to our hotel in Rome and hotel to the airport. It was 80 Euros for a mini van to seat 5 with a large amount of luggage for the transfer. I cannot tell you how the transfers were, as that was the cruise that grounded. But, they did not charge us for short notice cancellations as others on the the cruise were with other companies. And they were on time, friendly, clean, and full of information for the tour, so I would suspect the transfers would have run smoothly, also.

Good luck.
