Ncl Is Going Smoke Free!

Are there people who would really cancel over this? I'm surprised because you still have places to smoke. And if we all think this isn't going to happen on other cruise lines then we're probably being naive. It's a trend right now.

I just came off the Miracle in May and the Victory on Monday. I can smoke there and I guess I will be back on Carnival until they pull this too.

Unfortunately, we smokers are the easiest group to abuse and it is not considered racism, bias or anything like that. It is considered appropriate to simply legislate us away. It's quite ok for nonsmokers to have a holier than though attitude and treat us with distain and sometimes downright nastiness no matter how considerate we smokers try to be -- smoking only in designated areas, asking others in the group before lighting up and putting it out when asked. I don't treat overweight people with such nasty distain, and addiction to food is just as hard an addition to break (and as a small person, I'm usually the one on the plane stuck sitting next to the very large person who is in my seat). But we smokers take it and take it and take it.

 

I agree completely that NCL SHOULD HAVE GIVEN SOME NOTICE. We have a two week cruise on the Star coming up, 2 weeks on the Pearl for the holidays, another two weeks on the Jade next august and then on the Sun for south america for the 08/09 holidays. I am VERY MUCH going to rethink that because NCL has changed the product it offers me and frankly I'm not sure it's worth the value.

 

I will accept changes in itinerary, unforeseen events due to acts of nature or a higher authority. I will NOT accept changing a man made rule without them giving me the choice to cancel for a full refund or make some other accommodations.

 

A simple solution would indeed be ONE smoking bar WITHOUT CIGARS. Otherwise I can guarantee you that I will NOT be spending much money on drinks on this upcoming trip.

 

 

Very well said. It would cost me too much to cancel my Dawn cruise but I'm researching other lines to replace my Pearl cruise. (Princess has something similar) I was looking forward to the Pearl but I don't bowl anyway! ;)

You've got one. It's in the casino. As others have pointed out, your not liking the casino bar is not really the problem of NCL/NCLA or the majority of passengers who don't smoke.

And your point is?? Waht is NCL going to do when all the smokers take over the casino to smoke and NOT Gamble? And chase all the paying customers out? Take that away too?

 

I just think this was a poorly laid out plan.

Re Europeans and smoking, it will be interesting to see what a line like Princess does. Their passenger base is mostly American but attracts a huge number of Brits and a lesser number of continental Europeans. It will be instructive to see how they handle this in coming months and years.

I agree, I am so glad I had already cancelled the Repo, but now I have to find replacemnets for the next 3 booked. But they are next year so I have plenty of options.

The Cigar Bar is NOT a Bar, it is a glass room with about 12 chairs. The bar closest is NOT open during the day. So the closest OPEN bar is again the Casino :confused:

The Cigar Bar is NOT a Bar, it is a glass room with about 12 chairs. The bar closest is NOT open during the day. So the closest OPEN bar is again the Casino :confused:

I'm looking at a deck plan of the Star and I see the cigar bar is a few feet from not one but two other bars where alcohol or other liquid refreshment can be readily obtained: Gatsby's and the wine bar. It's hard to see this as extreme hardship.

 

Still curious about what ship Pooh is referring to.

Using figures on this board there will (on average) be 400-600 smokers on board and the cigar bar (on the Dawn according to the NCL website)accommodates 8. No problem! :rolleyes:

No problem at all. The rest will go to the casino, their cabins and out on deck, and some will go to other cruiselines, to be replaced by the hordes of non-smokers and reasonable smokers who applaud NCL's new policy. See how easy this is?

 

Nice try extrapolating the number of onboard smokers from this board--probably won't withstand a cursory statistical validation, but a nice try nonetheless.

Ok, let's see how convenient it would be for you to have to remember every time you went to dinner to stop at the nearest bar and get your drink because they only served coffee, tea and water. Uh, the difference is that you were making a big deal about there not being a bartender in the cigar bar. Really, this isn't hard. You're going to be able to get a drink to go with your cig without too much trouble. Honest.

 

Are the Star's Gatsby and wine bar really only open at night? Or is that just on port days? If it's the former, I haven't encountered this on any other NCL ship; they tend to keep their bars open all day and night when more than a few passengers are on board.

Okay, I'm looking at the Dawn deck plans and lo and behold, just like the Star, the cigar bar is mere feet from two other bars.

 

Really, if one were the suspicious type, one would get the impression that you people are looking for stuff to wail about. If you can't walk 10 feet to a bar, you should be tested for COPD.

Do you think that's a real analogy to walking a few feet to the bar next to the cigar bar? Are you seriously arguing that this is an inconvenience? If NCL assigned a full-time bar waiter to the cigar bar, would that satisfy you?

Why is there always a comparison with eating and smoking? The reason people don't like smokers is because it affects non-smokers and can kill people. People who overeat do not affect others around them (unless they fall on you or explode). If they invented a cigarette that didn't affect non-smokers at all, with no smell etc. I wouldn't care if you smoked them near me. However when I spend money on nice cloths and cologne and go out and 30 minutes later I smell like an ashtray and have inhaled enough smoke to actually make me ill over time, then I have a major problem with it.

 

Don't get me wrong, I think they should have a place for you to smoke, a bar somewhere that does not affect non-smokers, but just don't try to compare with other things unless they have a direct affect on those around you.

If you will go back and read my posts my PROBLEM is with NCL not making this information known to people before they book cruises and make final payment. My husband bought and paid for a cruise that he thought he would enjoy. Now he can either not smoke in any "bar" but the casino (which I can guarantee you you won't be able to get into, you couldn't last year when this rule wasn't in place) or the "cigar bar". As I said previously, if I could get our money back I would and then all the non smokers could have the ship to themselves, which is what they want anyway. That is fine, it will be that way one day I am sure on all cruise lines and then as hubby has said, we will do other types of vacations. We aren't hard to get along with if we know the rules up front, it is when the rules change in midstream that makes us mad. Oh well, nothing will ever come of any of this discussion anyway so I am off to do something more productive.
