Seeking Rome to Pompeii Advice

Recommended Posts

Hello! We are going to be in Rome for one full day prior to departing for our Eastern Med cruise this fall. Although we will be on the Amalfi Coast for a day on the cruise, and have already booked a private tour with Marcello, we are considering doing Pompeii from Rome to allow us more time on the Amalfi Coast and to have a less rushed itinerary. Can anyone tell me if it would be worthwhile to take the train from Rome to Pompeii (Naples?) and if so, how difficult would it be to do that? Would it be confusing (i.e. too much potential for getting lost)? Or would it be better to do an escorted motorcoach tour from Rome? I looked into doing a bus tour and it sounds like quite a long drive which reduces the time actually spent touring Pompeii. Or would it be better to just include Pompeii with our private tour with Marcello when we are down at the Amalfi Coast? We definitely want to see Pompeii during our trip. Any advice, suggestions or feedback on this would be ever so appreciated! Thanks!

It is a killer coach (bus) ride. You can take a fast train to Naples from Roma Termini, walk 3 minutes to the Piazza Garibaldi station and hop a train to Pompeii. A sample trip:

Rome departure: 0725; arrive Pompeii 9:39

Pompeii departure: 1740; arrive Roma: 2016

I have done a trip to Pompeii by tour bus from Rome through Naples for a looksee and another stop I can't remember, and it really was not all that bad.We had a good guide on the bus,and at Pompeii, and was not a bad trip.If I were to do it again, and I probably will, I would go by train, pick up a guide at Pompeii, and then back to the museum in Naples. We used the Greeniline Tours.Just to give you asome added info.

Also,do a serch on this board as there is a load of info on getting to Pompeii, what to see and do as well in Naples. One word of caution...if you are going in early Fall it can be very hot in Pompeii so make sure you have water and a hat!!
