Long Lines with Kids

New2cruising:

I'm going to assume from the picture in your post that your kids can all talk, which really helps with waiting games.

One of our favorite games when we wait is what we call "Favorites." You ask, in round-robin fashion, what everyone's favorite (blank) is. For example: favorite subject in school, favorite color ... food, dessert, teacher, movie, vacation spot, Disney character, car, animal, relative, cartoon, toy, etc.

Not only does it eat up a lot of time with several kids, but you learn a lot about them:) (and they about you). Like, my 8-year-old's favorite color is now light blue (last month it was purple). And my 5-year-old favorite vacation spot is Disneyland.

"I Spy" is another old favorite. Or count something together: red shirts, flip-flops, people who don't use hand sanitizer, etc.

Good luck!

My hubby can be quite impatient so often we try to avoid the more popular times. If going off the ship into a tender, we try to wait a while (most of the time we don't do excursions anyway...and if you're doing a ship's excursion, you get first priority) or popular times for eating. When the dining room is about to open, especially on the first day when each party gets individually escorted to their table, we wait awhile before going. Most of the time, there isn't a line five minutes after the dining room opens.

First of all the wonderful little secret of tender boats is if ANY of your kids are in a stroller you will have to take the elevator to the tender deck and get in front of loads of people who must wait on the stairs. ;)

If you kids are old enough to spell...we do an alphabet game...start with the letter A and something simple like foods and say...I know Apple starts with the letter A...what food starts with the letter B...and go from there. If the line gets really long move onto animals names too. lol

Encourage your kid to come up with harder and harder answers, like Asparagus for A.

Michele ~ I have wondered several times about one of your signature line photos. Are you sitting next to a vacuum cleaner????

How do youkeep your kids entertained while waiting in long lines? I've heard that the tender lines or buffet lines can be quite long. Do you have a strategy for limiting this on impatient kids? THanks.

I am sure you know the old game ""SIMON SAYS".......it always seems to quiet the kids as they must listen to play correctly.....enjoy!

We play "Name 10". You give the family a category and they have to name 10 of them. Vegetables, states, presidents, cities that start with "A". You can make it easy for little ones and difficult for older ones. Sometimes we even stump ourselves. :)

LOL...yep it's "HENRY"....Henry became a big star on the RCCL cruise board. There was a big thread going in the floataway lounge where we all tried to get a picture with Henry the vaccum cleaner. The vaccums on RCCL are named Henry and they have a little faces on them.

So it's all in good fun. :D

Unfortunatly, Henry is being replaced on RCCL with new models. So there won't be many more Henry pictures around.

My kids are older (10) so we play name that movie. I give them a line from a movie and they have to guess it. Like "Talk to the hand" is from Terminator 2 and "F.A.B." is from Thunderbirds. I have to keep up on all their movies but they like it. I have one son who has add and hates to wait in any kind of line so we will probably try to go buffet, etc. when less crowded.
