Trunk Bay - water to rough to snorkel

Hi, we went to Trunk Bay last year on our own to snorkel, but when we got there, we found out that the trail was closed due to rough weather. What are the odds that in February it is too rough again before going to Trunk Bay? Does this occur often? Is there a way to find out that day if the water is too rough? What / is there a good back up plan for someone who wants to snorkel in St John?

Hopefully, the second time around is calmer! But I have to admit, the beach was gorgeous!

Have been to Trunk bay 3 times, 1st mid feb. very calm, last 2 times the first part of Jan. very rough. 1st time snorkeling was fantastic. the last 2 times not so good, almost dangerous, but I did see a Sea Turtle last time. It just seems to be kind of a crap shoot to me. I don't know of a way to check conditions prior to spending a lot of time getting there. Even when the water is rough it is still probably the prettiest beach we have been to. Also we really enjoy the getting there and back. The ferry rides (which ever one you take) are always very scenic, and Cruz Bay is a lot of fun to check out.

Thanks for the info. My brother in law is coming on this trip with us. He and his wife lived in St Croix for two years. I think I will have to email him to see if he knows a way to find out if it is calm before going all the way over there. I am sure there are some in our party that may not enjoy being hauled all the way over there when they could have stayed in St Thomas.

If I find out anything, I will post on here.

We were in St Johns for Presidents week in February this past year and the waters were very choppy. Even the ferry ride over was not good. People getting sick- bleaak.

Does it really matter the time of year?
