Another question for Pearl veterans

In your experience, what are the wardrobe needs for aboard ship on the Pearl to Alaska? Did most people wear coats/suits/ties, etc., or given the casual nature of the Alaskan destination remain very casual even aboard the ship and when dining? Your input will be appreciated. Thanks.

last sept, on the 1st "formal" night...we had about 60% dressed up. many nice suits, after 5 dresses...many families getting portaits taken. but it was only the 1 night. there were long lines of people waiting to get their picture taken. that was on the star going to alaska. that same night we saw women in long dress, short dresses, pants and even a sweat suit..all in the same restaurant. it was a "anything but jeans and shorts" night.

after that it calmed down and was more kahkis for men and casual pants for women. i didn't pack any dresses or accessories to go with a dress, DH, FIL and BIL didn't pack any ties, FIL and BIL did have jackets..but took them off as soon as we get seated.

it really is the type of cruise where you can dress how you want. (except jeans and shorts after 5 in dining rooms)

The clothing rules for dinner have recently changed.

Here's the NCL FAQ:

How should I dress for dinner?

Freestyle Cruising gives you the freedom to dress as you please – morning, noon and night.

Casual attire is perfect for all restaurants during the day -- Khakis, skirts, jeans, casual tops, shorts or whatever. Swimwear with a cover-up is fine at the buffet and outdoor restaurant.

For dinner, collared shirts and pants or nice jeans work for guys. Slacks or jeans, dresses, skirts and tops are perfect for women. But if you want to dress up and add a little glamour when you dine out, that’s OK too – we’ve reserved one restaurant each night just for that.

For kids 12 and under, nice shorts are appropriate in all restaurants at all times.

Jeans are allowed in all the restaurants but one now.

I noticed that the dress code tends to be much more casual in Alaska than it is in the Caribbean. I think part of it is due to packing space -- by the time you have to take jackets, sweatshirts, etc., who has room for formal attire?

You definitely won't need a suit/coat/tie, but if you want to dress up for the fun or it, or to get photos taken, you won't be the only ones on the ship making that choice.

As mentioned above, jeans are no longer allowed in the Summer Palace at dinner time, so you might take that into consideration if you're interested in eating there.
