What happens in the even of a hurricane or tropical storm?

So, we are leaving on a our cruise on August 16th and am worried about it being hurricane season....what happens if a tropical storm develops? Will the ship still cruise?

 

Obviously it wont if a hurricane comes, but what about tropical depression and tropical storms in the gulf?? How does this work and what should we expect if there is one.

As long as the ship can get out of port before a storm it will do so. They will keep you out of harms way that you can count on. The ship can travel average 21 knots and even a fast moving storm can't travel that fast, but you may encounter rougher than normal seas, and have to make an alternative port of call. Just relax and enjoy your cruise.:D

 

Personnally I love cruising in October sure it's Hurricane season but the chances of a cruise being directly effected are very slim.:D

I am so glad to see this post, I live in Tampa Florida, and the weather has not been to nice today. I leave on my cruise 8/5/2007 from San Juan, I am a little worried about the tropical storm that is moving about right now.

 

Living in Florida I have seen my share of Tropical Storms and hurricanes.

Does anyone know how they affect the port in San Juan, I know here if it is a storm coming , the ship trys to get out ahead of the store, so they leave early sometimes . Our Bay is low and they don't take changes of not being able to get out. How is it in Sja Juan, has anyone had info. on this.

I hope you have insurance. The ship will sail no matter what,the question is when.If a storm is in the way,your cruise will be shortened and those on it will get extra days. If its really bad, they will dock at any of the 4 other FL ports and bus everyone there.Its going to sail so don't worry about that.

They'll go a reasonable distance around any storms you encounter out at sea, but be prepared for rough seas if you are anywhere near the storm. I find that heavy drinking helps :D .

I have been in two cruises where we hit heavy seas, and in both cases we were able to avoid the worst part of the storm without changing itinerary.

We were scheduled to sail from Mobile the day Katrina hit, Carnival was in contact with us the two days before the storm, keeping us updated.It was obviously cancelled and we recieved a refund within a week. We were also on another cruise when a hurricane changed course and turned toward the western gulf. The captain and crew were great,keeping us informed constantly. We had to change our itenerary which was fine with us. We had to stay two extra days at sea until the port of New Orleans was reopened. One thing that really upset me was, even though we were fed every day and entertained just like the regular cruise, there were a lot of people lined up at the pursers desk complaining that we were charged two extra days of tips, $20.00. If a hurricane approaches, the captain will not take any chance with the passengers well being. HAVE A GREAT CRUISE.

Seriously, weather happens. It is a risk you take when you cruise. Just know that the Captain's goal is to keep you safe and as comfortable as possible. All these years and cruises later...the most we have ever gotten is a day or two of rain.

I always get insurance, but not for hurricanes. If the trip is cancelled, you would get a refund from Carnival. The only thing you could lose is airfare, but airlines are usually pretty good about giving credit for flights to hurricane-hit areas.

We were on the Inspiration when Hurricane Frances hit Tampa. We were scheduled to be back in port on Sunday, but the port was closed. So... we had an extra day in Cozumel and an extra day at sea. Back to port on Tuesday. It was horrible.... we had to use PAPER NAPKINS in the dining room :eek: :eek: and NO TOWEL ANIMALS on the last night :eek: :mad: :eek:

Come to think of it.... I believe Carnival owes me for that.... :D

This is the sort of thing that happens:

On Sep 5th. 2004 we were scheduled to sail the PARADISE from Miami to LA. Hurricane Frances hit Miami 9/5, the ship was at sea and stayed out to avoid the hurricane. We sailed 9/6. First port was to be Aruba but Hurricane Ivan was in the way. We skipped Aruba and raced ahead of Ivan. Once thru the Panama Canal we were to stop at many ports on the Pacific coast. But Hurricane Javier was in the way. They battened down the steel covers on the porthole rooms and we went full speed due west [way out into the Pacific] to avoid Javier. So even tho we encountered 3 hurricanes, we sailed, just many changes to the schedule.

 

2 days after we got back to Fl., Hurricane Jeanne nearly destroyed our house. That was much more important the the sailing inconveniences.

LOL, I laugh but the sad part is that there are those with that exact attitude. We would love two extra days even if we had to use paper napkins. It still beats the Bounty paper towels I normally use, LOL :D

Hope you didn't pay for extra tips, Carnival is there to serve you no matter what:eek: No excuse for slipshod service such as paper napkins and no towel animals.:mad: You at least deserve an upgrade on your next cruise for the pain and suffering :p

A few summers ago we were scheduled to visit Freeport. A hurricane beat us to the island so we just turned around and went to Montego Bay. Our seas were a little rough for one day, but not bad enough to keep everyone out of the dining room or away from events. They were just enough to let us know that we were on a cruise ship. The captain was great-kept everyone informed. Frequent announcements allowed us to e-mail family at home. We were having a wonderful time. No sense in letting them worry-especially our elderly parents. Bonus-Montego Bay was much nicer port than Freeport. Happy and safe sails to all :) .

Let me tell you, I've sailed two times through storms and it was NOT fun. The captain and crew do the best they can and the predictions are as good as can be but on one, we hit a wind squall and we were pitching and rocking for 2 days "sailing out of it"....the dining room was empty, the shows were cancelled for safety reasons, all outside decks sealed off from water, pools drained, etc,etc. I was fine because I don't get seasick but the rest of my group suffered badly. My blackjack dealer got sick if that tells you anything. Funny, I felt the best when I was in the casino...

 

The other time there was a tropical storm, predicted, but we were told they would sail "around" it. It was pretty bad, too, but we did get to see our towel monkey swing up to the ceiling from side to side. In short, Bonine, ginger, whatever. You needn't worry about safety. These are professionals. BUT, take something for seasickness and don't expect them to hold the ice carving demo with the chainsaws when the boat is sideways!

You have GOT to be kidding me :rolleyes: What are people who are that cheap doing on a cruise in the first place? I would LOVE it if cruising cost an average of $10 per day! ;)

If you are lucky you could end up on a 10 day cruise for the price of 7! We were out in the Caribbean when hurricane Rita came into the Texas coast September 2005. We couldn't get back to Galveston until Wednesday, but we had perfect weather and the best cruise ever! We weren't sure if our car would be there when we got back, but there wasn't anything we could do about it so we just had another martini and enjoyed the extra free days of cruising!:cool:

Could you imagine being one of the ship crew-getting ready to go home after 6 months on the ship and not being able to because of a hurricane? And then having to keep cleaning up after pax while keeping a smile on your face for Lord knows how many extra days?

 

I'd rather face the hurricane. :D
