Basel to Amsterdam in 2008

We booked a cruise from Basel to Amsterdam for May 11, 2008. Any recommendation on booking a flight ourselves. We are flying out of San Francisco.

We're booked on Uniworld's River Queen from Amsterdam to Basel, boarding on May 4th. What ship/line are you sailing? We'll wave to you somewhere along the Rhine when we pass in opposite directions!

 

We've had good direct flights from Washington Dulles (IAD) on UA in to Amsterdam and return from Amsterdam in 2006 and 2007, respectively. I don't envy you guys having to come 'cross country to make that connection, though.

 

If you haven't been sailing on the Rhine before, your long flight(s) to get to the ship will be worth it.

Go to http://www.itasoftware.com. You cannot book filghts directly from this site, but there is a wealth of information available. You can check an "open jaws" ticket as well by selecting multisegment. Be sure to click on "remove last segment" if you are only checking two flights such as SFO to Zurich and Amsterdam back to SFO. Right now the cheapest round trip in mid May 2008 is $1079/person on United with one stop. No non stops are available. Basel is one hour from Zurich by train which you can pickup at the Zurich airport.

 

Zurich is worth a day or two for sightseeing as is Amsterdam. We did this trip in the Fall of 200 and added a few days at each end of the river cruise on our own.

We are planning to fly to Zurich 2 days before the cruise.

The next step, I start looking how to get from Amsterdam to Budapest. We are thinking to stay three days in Budapest before flying back home.

We are going to be on Viking Sun.
