*Mach* Posted August 3, 2007 #101 Share Posted August 3, 2007 Whomever had the helm pushed the thrusters just a might too hard and slammed into the dock. Someone is in trouble. The last time something happened like this in NYC was when the person at the helm of the Staten Island Ferry fell asleep at the wheel, slammed into the dock and caused some needless senseless deaths and quite a few life maiming injuries. This should NOT happen to a cruise ship with multithrusters, tugboats guiding it in, etc. I'm sure the investigation is going to conclude some form of human error. Can't blame machines for everything. BnB Does the Pilot dock the ship or does the Captain???? Nevermind... I see that my question has been answered.... several times! joan_al Posted August 3, 2007 #107 Share Posted August 3, 2007 What about the pilot? Doesn't the ship at some point become their responsibility? Especially in a heavy traffic area? Wa-la, hooray for you! You're absolutely right. The pilot is responsible for the docking of the ship from the time he/she steps on the bridge before the ship enters the harbor. The Captain ussually gets the commands from the harbor pilot.

crystalblue0610 Posted August 3, 2007 #118 Share Posted August 3, 2007 How in the world does a ship hit a building like that? Could they not see it? Coming in a bit too fast? That's weird

gwn1 Posted August 4, 2007 #121 Share Posted August 4, 2007 Dear Dance4fun. We're sailing on Carnival Victory on Aug 11. Can you tell us when/where to go for couples dancing on board? we were on the Carnival Victory this morning and also did not feel anything ( near stern starboard balcony cabin). We were packing suitcases during the time this accident happened in prep for walk-off. We found out when our TA called our cell phone to get an update "from the scene" from us. He had other clients about to start travel to NYC for today's departure who wanted to know whether the ship would sail. We were wondering if something was going on because about 1/2 hour earlier we were in the Pacific (stern) dining room having breakfast when 2 NYC harbor police boats with flashing lights came up behind the ship. The accident really was unfortunate. Most of this past cruise was under heavy fog. I have great pictures coming into St. John showing the density of the fog. It was tough to see the blue doors on the pier warehouse. From our almost to the stern balcony, there were many times during the cruise that the bridge was almost completely hidden by fog. But not this morning. By the way, Kudos to Carnival Victory for the cruise sailing date of 7/28 and ending today. We thought the cruise was a great value and had a good time. Of course there are things that we would change, but nothing like the issues that others were reporting on this site at the beginning of July. We'll probably write a review later tonight. karenh1127 Posted August 4, 2007 #124 Share Posted August 4, 2007 This might just be me, but if I am ultimately responsible for something, then I want to be the one doing it. I have a hard time delegating anything because if I do it myself, I know it gets done and done right. So If I am in charge of the ship, then I will be the one to steer in into the harbor. Others can stand by and give all the advice they want. But thats just me. :)
1cruiser2004 Posted August 5, 2007 #125 Share Posted August 5, 2007 This ship is going out to dry dock Oct 21 - Nov 3. Does anyone know if this was already scheduled or are they pulling it out due to the accident. I was thinking of going on the Victory and I'm hoping they're going to replace carpet and do some updating when they pull it out of the water. I think it was due anyway but it was scheduled to be pulled out early next year right before John Mayer was scheduled to perform. ????
