Jeep/car rental at port? OK to tour on our own?

Are there jeep/car rental companies at the port? Is it OK to tour the island on our own? If not, then we will go with a private tour operator. We have rented jeeps and toured on our own in St. Thomas, St. Maarten, St. Croix, Aruba, Curacao, Barbados, St. Lucia, Cozumel, and Grand Cayman, but we have used private tour operators in Antigua, Jamaica, Belize, and Costa Maya.

There are no car rental companies located at Port Zante. The closest is on Bay Road in Basseterre. http://www.horsfords.com/horsford/avis

It is fine to tour the island on your own. In St. Kitts they drive on the left hand side. A visitors drivers license costs $62.50 EC and is available from any police station or from the car rental agency. Drive slowly and defensively - people often stop along the roads without warning to chat; also it is common to see animals, sugh as goat, sheep, cows and donkeys on the road. Often young childen walk to school on the raods.

Also be aware of your surroundings and keep your doors locked and valuables out of site.

You will receive a better feel of the island and its history and culture if you take a guided tour. I highly recommend Thenford Grey. http://*****

Liz,

Thank you so much! We will be in St. Kitts from 2:30 p.m. 8:00 p.m. We're concerend that the odd time will make it impossible to take a tour or to rent a car. It appears that most tours start in the morning and that most car rental companies close around 5:00 p.m. Is there much to do right near the port, withink walking distance, or a taxi ride away? I wish we had a full day!

Thanks,

Allison

You should contact Thenford regarding a tour of the island and see if there is enough time to visit Brimstone Hill Fortress http://www.brimstonehillfortress.org and the Caribelle Batik Factory.

You could also go to the beach where you can hang out at Mr. X's Shiggidy Shack http://www.mrxshiggidyshack.com or Ziggy's Beach Bar http://www.ziggysbeachbar.com

From Porte Zante you can walk to The Circus in Basseterre and visit Island Hopper Gift Shop or Pelican Mall.

Liz,

Thanks again! I will follow up on all of your suggestions. We're so excited to finally go to St. Kitts, even if it is just for an afternoon. Hopefully we'll have time to see most of the sights without missing the ship!

Thanks,

Allison
