ehogan Posted August 21, 2007 #1 Share Posted August 21, 2007 We are trying to decide between Heathrow and Gatwick airports, but we want to know if there are train connections to Victoria station in London from Gatwick. We will be staying in the Victoria area to facilitate train travel to Dover for a cruise. Thanks in advance

handfordr Posted August 22, 2007 #3 Share Posted August 22, 2007 Gatwick is much further out than Heathrow and the defacto way of getting to Gatwick from London is the trains from Victoria, (roads are very bad). The frequent Gatwick Express is the dedicated train for airport passengers but costs nearly 15 GBP per person. Local commuter style trains are available that are cheaper. From Heathrow, the coach service from Heathrow only costs 4 GBP per person to Victoria and a prebooked taxi direct to your hotels door would cost 40 GBP or less. Victoria itself is made up of a lot of cheap hotels of questionable standard. There are a few 4 stars in the district and a couple of good B&B's/Budget hotels but they are quite expensive unless there is a special deal available. You may find it more cost effective to stay in Kensington. Paddington or Bloomsbury and get a taxi to Victoria. Kensington and Paddington are much better for Heathrow than Gatwick. Morgans Posted August 22, 2007 #4 Share Posted August 22, 2007 Coming into Victoria from Gatwick is very easy indeed and I would recommend the Gatwick Express service. There are also plenty of good quality hotels near the station - as well as cheaper B & B's etc. There is something to suit every budget. Getting to Dover from Victoria is also very easy so staying in the area makes sense. I see no reason why you need to change your plans. Staying in Paddington would be no better at all. There are some very grim places near Paddington!
