ycasey66 Posted August 27, 2007 #1 Share Posted August 27, 2007 We'll stay near Piazza Novona post-cruise. Does anyone know how much for 2 people to go from the pier to our hotel? Our hotel can arrange a driver for Euro 170 for 2 people. Is there a cheaper way? Thanks

JohnL1935 Posted August 28, 2007 #3 Share Posted August 28, 2007 Last fall after our cruise, arrangements were "completed'" by the other couple with us but the driver never showed up. I tried to get some of the drivers to radio to their dispatacher to see if a driver was near by but it is too far to get someone there in a hurry. As the crowd was getting smaller a taxi who wanted around E250 to take the 4 of us to Rome finally came down to E160 or so. Your quoted price is in the ball park and you can only lower it(per person) by getting 2 or more to go along with you. John L.

I just did that and instead of paying 120 euros for the 2 of us, we're paying less than 50 euros. It's definitely worth trying.

ehogan Posted August 28, 2007 #6 Share Posted August 28, 2007 Have you considered the train? We have done this 4 times, including this past March. There is a short walk from the pier to the train station (10 minutes) and the train trip is about an hour - cost varies from 4 Euro per person one way to 12 Euro, depending on the train you take. This is quite doable if you can limit your luggage ( you need wheeled luggage) and you are physically able to lift your bags up onto the train. We had one medium suitcase and carryon each. corkpopr Posted August 28, 2007 #7 Share Posted August 28, 2007 we always take the train both ways. it is 4.20 one way or 9 euros and the difference is a one stop train prior to rome termini station or the 7 stop milk run. the one stop is 50 minutes and the other is 1 hr 10 min. call your hotel from the states before you leave (both to confirm your reservations and ask them how much a cab should be from rome termini). Rome termini is huge and it is a long walk to the front where the cabs are. finding out in advance can save you 10-20 euros to your hotel as there are no meters and you need to establish the price before you leave the station. we usually take two large suitcases each so it is a bit of a hassle but the 120 euros you save (minimum) will pay for a couple of lunches, the hop on hop off bus, and admission to at least one site. Can you take a taxi from the train station to the port and will they be able to go right to the ship?
ehogan Posted August 28, 2007 #9 Share Posted August 28, 2007 We walked from the train station to the pier, quite a pleasant walk. I did not see any taxis and have read on other posts that taxis are few and far between. My impression is that the taxis are pretty much only interested in driving you into Rome and not in small fares to the pier. Once you get to the port entrance, the port provides free shuttle busses to the ships. The poster after my original post gives more detail about the trains. We took the "regional" train, which stops at many towns, still it wasn't much more than an hour into Rome. There is a faster train, it costs more and I believe you have to have a reservation. The cheaper tickets can be purchased at the train station or even in the little cafe located at the train station. There is a great deal of info on these boards about this train trip - just do a search.
