Diving in Fort Lauderdale

We have a day in Fort Lauderdale after our cruise. We were thinking of doing a couple of dives there. Is there a diveshop/guide that anyone would recommend? Thanks!

my daughter is scheduled to do a dive in Lauderdale on 9/23 the day before our cruise. I can let you know how that works out for her if you are leaving after that timeframe. I believe she spoke with two diveshops at length.

If you go on the website http://www.jndscuba.com, they dive out of the Pompano Beach area right there as they take students to a marina there and take dive boats out there.

About a zillion years ago, I used to teach for Force E Scuba in Boca Raton. They have a Ft. Lauderdale location too. Assuming things haven't changed too much, they run a great operation and use really nice charter boats.

Em is diving with ProDiveUSA (Ft.Lauderdale) and is the highest rated and they offer escorts if you are diving yourself for only $15 a dive. They've been good so far. We are arriving at 10:30 and her dive is at noon. (The dive shop is only 7 miles from the airport).

When is your cruise? When do you return to port?

Our cruise is not until February. We return to port on February 16th and have that day free.

You said you were a new diver....

 

Just a quick caution (you didn't provide any details on your return), are you flying out the next day? Remember DAN recommends at minimum 12 hours between diving and flying for no-decompression diving and 18-24 hours (I go for 24 hours) for any dive that required decompression. :) And these are minimum times. Longer is better. If you aren't flying, never mind. ;) In either case, hope you have a wonderful dive (I haven't done Ft. Lauderdale but I've heard good things about it, not as many divers dive FLL as the keys and they say the reefs are in excellent shape).

Thanks for the warning Randall! I actually DIDN'T know that yet. Guess we haven't gotten that far in our class. We are not flying out until the next afternoon so should actually be around 24 hours. I am WAY to new to this to do a dive that needed decompression so that should be OK, right? YIKES!

Decompression is at 65Ft. or greater (those 3 minute stops at 15 ft. they should have talked about in your class). 24 hours SHOULD be ok. Don't cheat on this, getting DCS on one of your early dives isn't something to brag about. :) Tell your dive master about your flight as well. If they're any good, they'll keep a close eye out on you to make sure you don't slip too deep. Also some dive boats offer different profiles to dive on. Tell them you want a shallow one. :D
