? about cruise for 1 eye person

I had a different medical problem several years ago, but the symptoms were very similar to yours. I saw triple images in my left eye, so I understand your concern. However, the brain is a wonderful organ! If you are willing to use a patch on the "bad" eye, you will adjust to vision in one eye quickly. The only thing is be aware that your depth preception will be off some. It will not take away from the enjoyment of your trip. I like the idea of using some "decorated" patches. (I also love anything to do with hummingbirds!). Have fun with it! I hope that your medical condition improves in the near future. Go ahead and enjoy your cruise!

I only see double & triple when both eyes are open. can only use lft eye only for about a min then headache & vertigo starts so use rt eye only. LOL I already know about the dept preception being "OFF". have fallen, walked into things, over stepped & dropped things I thought I had reached far enough to set on counter or in fridge. not a nice thing to have to mop up orange juice up off the kitchen floor :o

One thought that I have is that maybe you should notify the special needs dept to get a shower chair. Vertigo in the shower is not such a good thing and the chair is a huge help. Also, possibly think about getting a wheeled walker (rollator) it also has a seat to it. That way if the ship is rocking you don't have quite so much worry about falling. Of course if you are lucky, and your vertigo is cooperating, then when the ship goes one way your vertigo will compensate for it and you will be the only person walking "normal";) I have MS and have had optic neuritis so have experience with all sorts of vision issues and vertigo problems. Since the majority of the docs are saying it is fine I would go for it and make the most of your trip. Check with the dr though about a patch for the vertigo as compared with antivert--which is meclizine by a fancy name. The ships provide meclizine!

Just noticed that you are new to the boards.... or are you? I personally have never seen a one-eyed troll. Sorry, couldn't resist. I'm positive you're not a troll (someone who posts silly things on boards just to see what happens). Have a great cruise. (Do you often take medical advice from strangers rather than doctors)(oops only kidding again)

I say take a patch and go for it, 2 months from now you will prob feel so much better and be used to your limitations as they are or will be for awhile. Your friend and yourself have looked so forward to it im sure she wouldnt mind helping you a bit if need be. So much better than canceling a cruise!

I'm thinking with all this going on with your eye...shouldn't you stay off the computer?? Doesn't being on here bother you?? Hell I get headaches from it with 2 good eyes!!

lol sometimes the headaches come from the words that are written, not the reading of the words.

I behaved myself the first day you posted this thread.

I say.....

Wear a patch....get a pirate outfit....slap a peg leg on and put a parrot on your shoulder and have a "GREAT" time.

You deserve it......

PS: They also rent formal pirate outfits on the cruise.......LOL

Yes, I am new to the boards (of any kind) and to cruising (never been). LOL u never know I could be a troll (in that case should be on the halloween cruises :D ). Not asking for medical advice. am asking for openions on about doability & level of enjoyment possible from folks that are experienced. Besides, these strangers have put me in contact w/a couple of folks that have had simular events in their lives. That in itself helps me :) .

I am only on for a small time at a time. Right now it is my only source of enjoyment. Do u relise that there is NOTHING on TV during the day? If my 1 eye feels stress I put the puter aside & go lay flat on my back so everything will level out again. I am being careful. This whole thing has changed me alot. I used to leave home at 5:30 am & work from 6:30 am till 8:00 pm then another 45 min home. Lots of folks & family have said for years SLOW DOWN & take time for ur self. WELLLLLLLLLL.... Here I am.

Oh my goodness. LOL..Why behave ur self? This board has done alot to help my attitude as far as the cruise. Keep it up & maybe it will actually turn my sight & vertigo onto a fast track to cured and not just getting used to it.

I work for the Texas prision system. so, I very seldom take any comments personal unless the person says my name and actually means harm, Then I mainly pray for them. Now my reaction to a personal attack on 1 of my children  might scare even the most hardened of people  .

LOL I could "see" myself renting and wearing a formal pirate outfit to dinner. I am really hoping to find a cloth patch made out of cloth that friend at work can actually paint a humming bird on for me.

kktex is not taking medical advice from us. kktex already stated his has talk to the "DR.'s" about going on the cruise. From what I understand two have okay it, one would prefer kktex not go.. I would go with the opinions of the two that said to go. I personally think we all would do better with out Dr.'s other then ER Dr.s. They are handy to have around...

kktex-I don't know when your cruise is, but have fun.. Its good to ask "opinions" from people.

Are you going to be flying? If so, be sure to ask your opt. about that. My husband has serious eye problems and we try to get non-stop flights because if we land and take off several times he has problems for several days. I know cabin is pressurized, but what happens still happens and the only consistent thing we can find is several take-offs and landings in one day.

LOL. u bet. I had to go by work yesterday after visit w/optomitrist. She put a cloth patch that sticks to skin on. I scarced the hell out of folks at work & had 1 girl crying. maybe I do need to go w/a patch where folks do not know me. Then on the other side one lady offered to help me out w/ a better looking patch. she is so talented on anything crafty. she said if I could get an extra patch made of cloth the she would try to paint a hummingbird on it for me to wear!!

PSS. I collect & am crazy about hummingbirds.

You scared people who worked at the prison?

nope, no flying. Galveston is a 3 hr drive south of me. Best friend would drive. LOL that is a big change in my life also. I get car sick easy if I ride so have ALWAYS done ALL the driving, whether it is her veh, mine or anyone else.

Yep, sure did. They are so used to me being the strong one who takes care of everyone else. And to see me seeing them w/1 eye & having to walk alittle ways & sit was a shock. I am the "go to" in a building of over 400 for anything medical. I am 1 of 3 trained for CPR, advanced medical & external defibulator. When u help others u are not supposed to be down. LOL kind of like all moms at home. mom gets sick & all goes to pot. You would be surprised, those who work in a prision have a leeryness of folks that they guard who have killed & raped & so on but are not "scared" of them but something that happens outside of crime scares them. (not sure I explained that very well). Besides, the eye patch the eye specialist put on me was not exactualy "pretty". That is why I would like to get one out of cloth that can be painted on for friend at work to paint for me.

Have you been diagnosed with anything? This sounds exactly like what I was going through a few years ago...look up Pseudo Tumor Cerebri and see if your symptoms are similar. Medication and if it gets too bad a spinal tap could relieve your symptoms...IF it's the case. PTC is very rare, so check it out, you may have a light at the end of the tunnel! :o

A cruise would be great because you can just relax and enjoy! Someone else does everything for you!!

Good luck!!

If you would like to contact me with any questions, feel free. dchurch4050 at charter.net :p

I would say if it was just the 1 eye thing to go ahead and go. But the Vertigo is a whole other story. I couldn't do it, especially if there were any weather creating any type of motion in the ocean. I just had my 1st experience w/sea sickness last week on the ecstasy, and let me tell you, It aint pretty. Once your head is in that toilet you are pretty much history and there is no escaping it. Good luck!

HELP!!! Have just had complications from spinal fluid leak that has caused me to see double & triple when using both eyes so down to using rt eye only :( . eye specialist & neurologist say it will take months (6) to get better if it does at all  . I can not drive or go back to work for who knows how long. I have booked & fully paid for carnival ectsacy cruise on 11/12/2007. Do I cancell cruise & try to get $ back or is it possible to do the cruise w/being new to seeing w/1 eye & having vertigo  ? Have dreamed of cruising for 25+ years & was going to be a reality finally untill laborday of this year. need help & advice. thanks in advance for advice & prayers.

I know about the once u start u never quit (or it feels like u never quit). I will do anything to keep from starting. someone said that maybe the vertigo would counter act the ship swaying & I would be the only one walking straight!!

were u on the Ecstasy comming in during the storm last week?
