Jack1 Posted September 14, 2007 #2 Share Posted September 14, 2007 We travelled from port of Civitavecchia (after our cruise) to Lugano, Switzerland in July 2007 by train. We had to travel to Rome and then change trains and then on to Milan and then change trains to Lugano. What exactly do you need to know? There was a 16 minute connection in Rome and 25 minutes in Milan. Doable but I wouldn't have wanted to do this with anymore luggage than we had. We each had 1 suitcase and a small backpack. ab0si Posted September 15, 2007 #4 Share Posted September 15, 2007 thanks faye, was wondering if this waa feasable and if you think it was worth the effort. we really want to see the lake district. was hoping to hear feedback from someone who has done this trip. Well, I've taken th train from Rome to Stresa (on Lake Maggiore) several times on to Como once. Unless you go to Lake Garda, you will be transfering in Milan. I'm not sure exactly what type of information yoou are looking for. Can it be done? certainly. Is schlepping 87 suitcases a PITA? Certainly. Are the Lakes worth visiting? My wife's favorite place in Italy is Lkae Maggiore in Autumn. Como is busier -- which is either a plus or minus depending on your style. Lake Lugano, IMHO, is the prettiest. Garda is not in moutainous country but is pleasant (It is close to Verona which is a great little city). If you are flying out of Milano, the southern tips of the lakes is as close to the airport as central Milan. Paul
ACJV Posted September 15, 2007 Author #5 Share Posted September 15, 2007 Thanks Paul, Do you think that you could enjoy day trips from Milan to the lakes? We will have two nights post cruise and was wondering if it was worth the trouble to ride the train from the port to Milan and spend day trips to the lakes? Jack1 Posted September 15, 2007 #6 Share Posted September 15, 2007 Vicki It was a full day trip for us to go from Civitavecchia to Lugano. I seem to remember leaving Civitavecchia around 9:22 am and arriving in Milan around 3:30pm. Then we had the trip to Lugano (arriving just before 5 pm). It is a long day and if this is one of the 2 days post cruise you have then it will be eaten up just by travelling. Yes, it is feasible but a long day none the less. Because we (3) had several days after the cruise that wasn't a concern for us. It definitely was cheaper (even going first class) than flying is. We had been to Como area couple years ago - pre-cruise out of Venice. Absolutely beautiful lake area. We are glad to have had the opportunity to see this area in the past and then revisit the scenery while on the train to Lugano. Yes, you can do day trips to Como area from Milan, we did. Are you flying home from Milan? While in Milan we were able to see the "Last Supper" painting and that was awesome for us. Had to reserve way in advance but to see this with only 25 people at a time is the way to view art. Hope this helps answer some questions.
