Price of cigarettes onboard?

Recommended Posts

LOL that is why I am asking I live in PA and a carton of just no names are close to $40.00.

I do know to get to the ship store early as they will sell out of the good brands such as Marlboro, but I haven't been on a cruise since 2005 so I needed an updated price.

Thanks everyone

Donna

Last year I bought a special 5 carton for around $80, one thing to keep in mind though is legally you are only allowed 1 carton and 5 packs per person to bring back in to the USA, I have read from the customs website they will confiscate any over that. So you may want to plan on hiding them in your luggage when you disembark.

I plan on smoking some on my balcony (shh don't tell my neighbors) Just kidding I'm surprised nobody is flaming this thread yet.

As far as them holding them until the end of the cruise that would be wrong, they do it with liquor which you used to be able to pay a fee to take back to your cabin. Now if they held Cigs they might not sell as many especially since you can only take 1 carton each home.

I dont smoke myself just buy them for relatives, I am also expecting people to flame because of sneaking cigarettes past customs. the more I think about it I think I was able to take the cigarettes back to the room after I bought them, its been a whole year.

You walk out with them from the shop they do NOT hold them, and depending on what islands you visit the amount changes. Not positive if I remember right if you visited St Thomas you could bring back 2 or 3 cartons per person.

Heres the text there are some exceptions though

A traveler may include up to 100 cigars and 200 cigarettes (one carton) in the $800 exemption from duty. U.S. residents on State Department-licensed travel to Cuba may no longer bring cigars or other goods back with them from their visit.

Additional cigars and cigarettes may be brought into the country, but they will be subject to duty and taxes. Cigarettes may also be subject to a tax imposed by state and local authorities. Bidis - essentially flavored cigarettes - are not generally permitted entry. Once every 31 days, a resident returning from travel from American Samoa, Guam, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, or the Virgin Islands of the United States may import 1,000 cigarettes (5 cartons), not more than 200 of which acquired elsewhere than in such locations, within the returning resident's $1,200 exemption from duty and taxes.

Hi,I was wondering if and where they allow smoking on the RCCL Jewel of the seas.We don't smoke and can't stand the smell of hotels that allow smoking.Up here in Canada it is almost impossible to smoke in any public places and hotels, resturants etc..I was hopeing it was like that on a cruise ship.If they allow smoking in rooms i will have to make sure our room is a non smoking room.i am not bashing smokers as i am a ex-smoker but just don't like the smell of rooms that allow smoking in them. Thanks

Currently all cabins on RCCL ALLOW smoking as well as the balconies, there is one side of the outdoor decks that is non-smoking and the other is smoking. There are some bars that allow it and others don't. In Jan of 2008 all smoking will be banned in the cabins, but most of the other areas will remain the same.

I wouldn't worry too much about the rooms. I can't stand the smell of cigarette smoke and am very sensitive to it, but have been on three RCL cruises and never smelt even a hint of it in any of my staterooms. The dining areas are all smoke free as well. Unfortunately most of the bars and the casinos allow smoking, so I rarely go to the casino and only frequent bars with large non-smoking areas. The one thing I really wish they would change is the balcony smoking as I found it hard to be on my balcony when nearby people were smoking.

As for customs, I think you may be able to take more than 1 carton back to the U.S. legally by declaring it and then paying duty on it which still would be much cheaper than buying them on land in U.S. Not 100% sure on this though; anybody know for certain if you can pay duty on the extra cartons and still save?

We bought cigarettes for my husband in Grand Cayman a couple of years ago and they would not let us take them with us. They were suppose to be delivered to the ship and given to us the night before we docked. They never made it but we had charged them to VISA so we got our money back. At the time (maybe 5 years ago now) they were $11 a carton there. Again, 5 years ago. Now 2 years ago he bought them in St. Martin for $12 a carton and he was able to take them with him. Don't know why the difference.

 Whoa!

I pay about $45 for ONE carton here in Michigan!

Wow, I had no idea they had gone up that high. My husband still smokes so I think he pays $28 in Florida. I stopped buying cigarettes years ago because they were too expensive so now I just smoke a carton a day of second hand smoke. It is way cheaper this way and I still get lung cancer or something related to it.

It was announced on our just comleted cruise on Rhapsody that as of Jan 1st the RCCL fleet will be just about totally smoke free. And if I understood correctly that was to include staterooms. There will be a few specific isolated places where smokers can go.

Interesting to note that the crew on Rhapsody voted to make all Crew spaces, quarters, bars and rec rooms totally smoke free. Crew must go outdoors on back of deck four to smoke. Progress!

I wouldn't bet the farm on this just yet :D. The smoking policy can vary greatly from ship to ship and with different itineraries. Nevertheless, cabins will be non-smoking in Jan with the exception of 3 ships (including Rhapsody). Those 3 will follow the new restriction some months later. Smoking will still be permitted on balconies. RCI is treading carefully with the smoking issue, trying to appease non-smokers without driving away smokers AND their non-smoking travel mates.
