verga Posted October 21, 2007 #1 Share Posted October 21, 2007 Our cruise ship will be in Naples on Nov 11/07 and my family group of 11 is planning to visit Herculaneum in the morning. Since Nov is off season, will all the houses at the Herculaneum site be available for public viewing? Would an audio guide be adequate OR should we hire a licensed guide in advance who will ensure that the "must see" houses will be available for our viewing on Nov 11? Any suggestions as to how we can optimize our visit of Herculaneum would be greatly appreciated.
Rare carlmm Posted October 21, 2007 #2 Share Posted October 21, 2007 At any time of the year some buidlings may be closed due to restauration or other needs. No guide has influence on this. The Sopraintendenza Archeologica di Pompeii is the sole responsible administration. An audioguide alllows you to take all the time you need and want. You can follow suggested itineraries or choose the places you want to get information about.

Rare taxatty Posted October 22, 2007 #4 Share Posted October 22, 2007 The audioguide is quite good. The is also a bookstore at the entrance where you can buy a helpful written guide if you want more information. Herculaneum is much smaller and less crowded than Pompeii so it should be easy to see everything without rushing. Les
Andym Posted October 22, 2007 #5 Share Posted October 22, 2007 Take the bus from the cruise ship to Herculaneum, great adventure. You can pick up a free guide book and map from the room opposite the pay booth. If you decide that you want to take a guided tour, you can negotiate with one of the guides that you will find at the entrance. They usually charge 10 euros per person, but Herculaneum is often very quiet and we had our own guide for the 2 of us for 20 euros. Herculaneum is a lot more complete thatn Pompeii.
