Mayaguez

This is a new port that is being developed as a cruise ship stop. Ours was only the second ship to stop here. The first had such tight security that noone ended up doing anything. They were much better prepared for us - there was a street fair set up and they were giving out free stuff - how cool is that!

Anyhow, the point of this is to recommend something if you happen to find this as one of your stops. I contacted Katarina Sail Charter before leaving home. They are based in Rincon which is about 20 miles north but are trying to garner cruise ship passenger business. The owners are transplanted americans and delightful people. They arranged for a taxi service to pick us up at the port and then take us back after a 4 1/2 hour sail on their catamaran. We had a group of 17 and everone of us agreed that this was the highlight of our port time.

There is not much to do at all in Mayaguez (no beaches!) so do your homework for things in the area if you stop there.

The best beaches in the mainland of Puerto Rico are located less than 30 minutes of Mayagüez, plus you will find surfing beaches in Rincón, coffee plantation, birding sites, museums, diving spots, and more.

Any way, when the cruise ships stop in San Juan their clients travel one hour to go to Fajardo for snorkeling, diving and kayak tours.

Just my two cents.
