sinclair Posted November 13, 2007 #1 Share Posted November 13, 2007 I am booked on a HAL cruise to Norway, Iceland and Greenland in 2008. I would like to buy a good guidebook for Iceland and Greenland, preferably only one book. I already have one for Norway. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Big Al B. Posted November 13, 2007 #2 Share Posted November 13, 2007 Are you doing the August 14th Eurodam sailing? If so, drop by our roll call: http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=570014 I have a Eyewitness Copenhagen, and looked to get the one on Norway, but haven't found much on Iceland or Greenland. sinclair Posted November 13, 2007 Author #3 Share Posted November 13, 2007 No,I am on the July 17 Prinsendam. Our roll call is not very active! Thanks for the reply. I can find seperate books on Greenland and Iceland but don't want to buy both and don't want to carry 2 different books with me.
kaisatsu Posted December 10, 2007 #4 Share Posted December 10, 2007 We have EyeWitness Norway, and honestly I don't really like it all that much. The big draw in Norway is the nature, which doesn't really lend itself to the kind of drawn maps and diagrams used in the EyeWitness books. Lonely Planet Norway is good for getting around, but if you're cruising, you probably don't need that.
Big Al B. Posted December 10, 2007 #5 Share Posted December 10, 2007 Kaisatsu, I think you may be right. I'm now thinking that the best thing would be just to visit sites on the net and take notes on the places we will be visiting.
Rare Keith1010 Posted December 16, 2007 #6 Share Posted December 16, 2007 For a lot of areas we do have guidebooks, but if I could make a suggestion it would be to utilize the on line web sites for Greenland and for Iceland. We enjoyed our stop in Greenland but there is really not too much to do there so I really would not make an investment in a guide book and for Iceland while there is more to do again I think you would do far better searching on line. And, again this is coming from someone who enjoys buying guidebooks for places that we will visit. Keith
sinclair Posted December 16, 2007 Author #7 Share Posted December 16, 2007 Thanks Keith. That will save me time, energy and $ searching for a guidebook, as well as the added weight in our suitcase!
Big Al B. Posted December 16, 2007 #8 Share Posted December 16, 2007 We met some folks who had gotten guidebooks from their library and just xeroxed the pages that applied to them. Took up a lot less space and weight. I guess you could also print off web information also.
mlkitt3 Posted December 17, 2007 #9 Share Posted December 17, 2007 We do the same Big Al when we have travelled to the USA Asia Caribbean Pacific areas I photocopied the pages from the travel guides from our local library. That way we only take only relevant information when we leave an area toss the papers away less weight to travel with. At the moment I have pages and pages copied that I will then cut out just the bits I need and put them on one sheet or as many as i need. Will catch up with you on the Eurodam Margaret Australia:)
