GloriaF Posted November 21, 2007 #2 Share Posted November 21, 2007 We were in Cartagena a couple of weeks ago and took a tour where there were opportunities to purchase coffee, emeralds, etc.. It is a huge city, and the port is mostly container ships. I don't think there are many, if any, tourist areas near the port. We bought coffee in Limon, Costa Rica. Our guide took us to a super mercado and helped us decide which coffees to purchase. We got 5 good-size bags for just over $10US. They will take US$, but your change is in the local currency. Dalmar Posted November 22, 2007 #3 Share Posted November 22, 2007 Find a grocery store (Supermercado Carulla is a big chain) and buy Cafe Sello Rojo or Cafe Aguila. It comes in 500g vacuum sealed packs. Cost is very low and the coffee is excellent. It's what the locals drink and is hard to beat.
NorthernLite Posted November 23, 2007 #4 Share Posted November 23, 2007 You can buy coffee, overpriced emeralds, and local handicrafts in a duty free area divided into a couple stores, an outdoor cafe and small park area right off the ship. Also someone from the Columbian tourist bureau was handing out 2 ounce packages of ground coffee free as people reboarded. We bought ours in Santa Marta right before we reboarded. The nice ladies take a polite no to buying as you're heading out. As in Costa Rica try to buy shade grown coffee and save a rainforest!
