Hotel for cruise out of Port Everglades

We stayed here 1 night precruise on January 16, 2008. This totally renovated hotel had just reopened 7 nights prior. We were extremely pleased. Our Concierge, Mark, was wonderful. He attended to our every request and more. In fact, the entire staff was very cordial and let us know they were ready and willing to serve as needed. We asked for a high room facing the cruiseships and wow.....did we have a view! :D We had a tenth floor corner suite w/floor to ceiling glass and wraparound balcony. We loved the pod-type coffee machine in the room (tea and coffee). Luxury linens and bath products. There is also a great breakfast buffet for $15.00 pp. This hotel is located directly across the waterway from the Hyatt Pier 66. It was nice to sit on the balcony and watch our ship come in. It was a 5 minute taxi ride to our ship (less than 2 miles total).:)

Thanks for the feedback. We are booked there pre-cruise 2/29. How was the pool? Any dinner places within walking distance? We get in early (about 10:30 a.m.).

Here's a list of the SE 17th Street area Shops & Restaurants...

Pazzo’s Cucina Italiano is right next door to Extended Stay America, diagonal to the Ft Luaderdale Grande... [/url]

Carlos and Pepe's (Mexican) & Dirty Harry's (bar with food) are in the same shopping center as Pazzo’s. There's also a small diner in that strip mall that I've been told has an excellent breakfast.

Einstein’s Bagels, Coldstone Creamery, Starbucks, Tokyo Sushi and Giorgio’s Pizza are across the street from Holiday Inn Express/Extended Stay America , just west of the Ft Lauderdale Grande

Bimini Boatyard and Bravo (great Italian restaurant) and an BonJour French Bakery across the street from Holiday Inn Express/Extended Stay America, and about a block east, opposite the Renaissance Hotel, west of the Ft Lauderdale Grande

Budget Car Rental is in the same plaza (Quay Plaza) as Bravo and Bimini Boatyard Restaurants.

Jack Jackson's new restaurant FISH is diagonally across the street from the Ft Lauderdale Grande, attached to the Convention Center complex at the entrance to Port Everglades... http://www.fish-fl.com/

Chuck's Steakhouse... and Waxy O’Connor’s are both across the street from Embassy Suites, a long block west of Holiday Inn Express/Extended Stay America

Outback Steakhouse is just west of Embassy Suites next to Hyatt Place, and Quarterdeck is across the street and a block north of Embassy Suites on Cordova Road, just beyond Winn-Dixie...

Kelly's Landing is a great New England style seafood place in a strip mall on Cordova Road, across the street from Winn-Dixie, next to Crown Liquors.

There are 3 large strip malls around Holiday Inn Express/Extended Stay America - More or less across the street, next door, and behind, as well as several smaller ones. There are at least a dozen other small restaurants scattered throughout those strip malls, plus a number of fast food and carry-out places in the area as well... You'll never go hungry along that section of SE 17th Street, there's something for every taste and budget.

Publix grocery store is in the Harbor Shops strip mall a block south on Cordova Road, behind Embassy Suites. Publix sell beer & wine as well as being very large, very nice grocery stores.

For liquor, beer and wine…Total Wine and More http://www.totalwine.com/ is located next to Publix. This store is to booze what Home Depot is to lumber, it’s huge!!!

For snorkel gear, fins, masks, clothing or any outdoor gear is available at Boaters World, next to Total Wine…http://www.boatersworld.com/

Dining establishments within the Harbor Shops ….

Carvel Ice Cream

Barnie's Coffee & Tea... http://www.barniescoffee.com/

RJ Gator’s… http://www.rjgators.com/ ,

The Original Steakhouse & Sports Theater… http://www.originalsteakhouse.net/,

Fire House Subs… http://www.firehousesubs.com/,

Camille’s Sidewalk Café… http://www.camillescafe.com/

Moe’s Southwest Grill…, http://www.moes.com/

CoCo Asian Bistro & Bar…, http://www.cocoasianbistro.com/

Crown Wine and Spirits is across the street from Embassy Suites, behind the Texaco station, and 67 Wine & Spirits is across the street from Crown.

Winn-Dixie grocery store is across from Crown, and there's a CVS drug store in the same strip mall as 67 Wine & Spirits.

Walgreens drug store is a block east of Holiday Inn Express/Extended Stay America, across the street from the Renaissance hotel.

The restaurants above are just those that you can easily walk to. If you take the Water Taxi you can easily get to dozens more.

The nearest Water Taxi stop is 2 long blocks east, under the SE 17th Street Bridge, in front of the Ft Lauderdale Grande Hotel... http://www.watertaxi.com/FortLauderdale/FLLHome.Asp

Some popular places easily accessible by Water Taxi are...

Actually I tried it and was very disappointed with their corn beef on rye sandwich. I'd expected real NY style corned beef and it turned out to be deli (processed and formed) corn beef, sliced and microwaved. I'll put them on the list but they should not even pretend to be a NY Style deli.

I've got to add Dough Boys pizza to the list. I've heard that they are almost like a NY style pizza. Don't know how that can be because the Florida water does nothing for bread or pizza dough in SoFla.

I had dinner at the Origional Steakhouse and Sports Theater Saturday night. My friends enjoyed their meals, I ordered the prime rib medium they gave me a dried out well done end cut. Needless to say I wasn't happy about it. I was too tired to complain and kick myself for not sending it back.

The last thing I want to do is start critiquing the SE 17th Street restaurants. If I did, y'all would have no place to eat. LOL. So keep this in mind, although it's posted it is by no means an endorsement, I'll leave the individul restaurant reviews up to you, my fellow cruisers. ;)

(I will however post restaurant inspectors reports now and then for the real nasty restaurants)

LOVE Dough Boys!!!! We are NY (upstate) natives who have been transplanted to Texas. Texas water REALLY does nothing for pizza!!!!

Dough Boys has a huge menu. We joke about spending a week in Fort Lauderdale just to try everything on their menu. HUGE portions, resonable prices, very casual.

WEEZE624 - Yes, it's a nice walk to several restaurants and casual eats. On cruise morning, we walked up 1A (away from the bridge) a couple of blocks to the French Bakery. The croissants were the best I have ever had - - huge, flaky and so buttery tasting. The waitress told me they were shipped from France and baked on-site. My DH and I had a couple of scrambled eggs, a container each of fresh, local OJ (the best!), with a croissant each. The bill was.....are you ready? $42.00!! We didn't view a menu ahead of time as they were just opening and stocking their bakery case (20 minutes after opening time). The waiter suggested those things and they sounded great as we were hungry! Yes it was wonderful, but we probably won't go back there! Then again, maybe we will - - it was that tasty! The night before, we took a taxi to the 15th Street Fishery around 5 p.m. They had a great selection on their early-bird menu with appetizer, entree and dessert for around $25 pp. This is our 2nd time dining there and it has been great both times. The spicy cheese rolls are out of this world. Plus, they have some very nice other rustic breads/rolls from which to select. It is located about 1/2 block behind the Ft lauderdale Grande (Hilton), but you have to take a taxi as a canal separates it from the hotel.

Does anyone have any info on this beach resort and yachting center?

Noni,

How did you stay go at the Bahia Mar? We bid on priceline for a post cruise stay in April and this is the hotel we were assigned. There are so many mixed reviews I was wondering what were your thoughts?

As pricey as breakfast was... you have me sold!!! I will have to put the French Bakery on our list for breakfast. It will start off our day of pampering. :D DH doesn't need to know the price yet! Then again, he can plan ahead. We have already asked them for a high room with ship views so I am hoping they can come through with that.

Thanks for the additional info. Anyone know of a good steak house there?

Hello all.

We are considering the following three hotels in Fort Lauderdale for a pre-cruise stay in October and have a couple of questions before we decide on where to book:

1. Grande Hotel - are there free shuttles from the airport and to the port? And is there complimentary breakfast in the morning.

2. Embassy Suites on 17th St. - do they have free shuttles from the airport and to the port?

3. Holiday Inn Express on 17th St. - are there free shuttles from airport and to the port? And is there complimentary breakfast in the morning?

The prices vary and I would like to get the best value for our money, plus stay in a nice and clean hotel. Any other thoughts would be great!! As always ... we appreciate your help.

Chuck's Steakhouse ;)

Oh, GREAT! I haven't checked this board in a while. We will have to eat at Chuck's and then the French Bakery in the morning. :D Thanks so much for the feedback. It certainly helps having a connection to someone who is so in the know about the areas before arriving and trying to figure it out on your own.

The one that we initially had booked, the Sheraton Airport, had free shuttle BUT nothing around it so we felt we would be isolated. The cost for a ride is minimal so we opted to get closer to the port and enjoy the surroundings. Good luck.We are going out on the Carnival Liberty on 3/1.

I highly recommend the Sleep Inn in Dania, clean, attractive facility with good breakfast included. Free transportation from the airport and to Port Everglades. It is adjacent to a Walgreen's Drug Store and a Publix Supermarket for any last minute needs. There a several restaurants in the Publix shopping center.

Doug--Do you know if the Sleep Inn will let you leave your car there during the cruise? for a charge?

Thanks!

Allison

Does anyone know anything about the econolodge on Taft Street. We are not at all familiar with Ft. lauderdalea rea and booked only because it had air and port shuttles. We are there on the 14th pre-Liberty cruise,

Just wondered if you Know: Is the hotel decent and are there restaraunts or shops close by? Thanks!
