Civitavecchia to rome

We are new to cruising and would like to know how easy it is to travel from the port to the center of Rome. We are doing the images of the Med tour X811 and would love any other information members have about the trip or destinations.

 

One daughter has been travel sick in the past is there any good doctors tips?

There is an excellent 1/2 hourly train service into Rome from the port. Cost 9 Euro return. Theres loads of information on the Europe board in the Ports of Call section.

Very easy.

The shuttle bus drops you at the dock gate. It's a short walk to the station and 9 euros (IIRC) for a ticket into Rome Termini. The ticket also covers bus and metro in Rome for the day.

Just make sure that you are back in time to board the ship!

 

As for travel sickness. Try crystallized Ginger, ginger biscuits etc before dramine, jags or whatever.

I would do the train as you will get more time than the P&O tours and you won't have to wait 30 mins for everyone to go to the Loo!!!

Although there are two trains an hour, they don't run every half hour. You can get train times in English from here

Most trains stop at St Peters (San Pietro). If you get off there, get on the bus outside the station (No.64 from memory but there is only one route and runs every 5mins) and then get off at the second stop. Take the underpass and you are then in St Peters square. You can do the Rome tour on the tourist bus from there if you wish.

Remember to validate (date stamp) your ticket at the machine on the platform before boarding, and you can use the same ticket on the Rome buses. A bargain for 9 euros return. Trains take about an hour to St Peters and about another 15mins to the main Rome station (termini). They are all failry modern and clean and generally run on time although sometimes you may find one cancelled so dont plan on taking the last train back.

When we went last April we were joined in the queue for the sistine chapel by a group of P&O passengers who had come on the coach but left half an hour before us and paid considerably more.

I would say take the tour if you are not keen or are worried about missing the ship. But it really is simple via the train.

HI there,

 

We were on a cruise (the Aurora) last year. We took the train in to Rome. It was a very easy walk to the train station and fairly easy to figure out which train to catch. It took us within a few blocks to the Vatican and then you can take the subway to get anywhere from there. Just be sure to watch your time so that you catch the train back, allowing the travel and walking back to the ship time. We had a little trouble our day as my husband had his pocket picked and we spent too long talking to the police and retracing some steps. Had to run to catch the last train out from Rome. The weather turned cold and rainy and that easy walk back to the ship became a tad miserable. However the ship did send a bus out to pick up passengers walking in Citavecchia towards the ship. That was nice. But the trip on the train is easy to do and I would recommend it. Just watch your pocket when in Rome!

We did a Rome tour (Essence of Rome) while on Arcadia in June/July this year, got to see lots of places which all had massive queues in the 88-90 degree heat, by walking passed the queues and being fast tracked in. The cost was expensive - £95pp !(WOULD BE CHEAPER FOR CHILDREN) But as we had never been to Rome before and didn't speak Italian , and knowing the ship won't wait for you if you miss the train, we took the safe option.

 

For that tour price we had;

 

Escourted coach trip from ship to Rome / return (1 1/2 hrs each way)

a 3 course lunch in an italian restaurant plus a glass of wine /beer or orange juice

fast track and included entrance tickets to...

Roman Forum

 

You see so much more on a escorted trip. We had Onboard credit, so we used it for this particular trip. Next time I go to Rome, I would probably do 'Rome on your own' now I have seen the main sights.
