We are going on the Star princess from Santiago to San Francisco in April; is it better to book a hotel from Princess or find something on our own?? Has anyone done this cruise?

We booked 3 nights hotel in December, 2007 at Radisson Plaza Santiago hotel at rate US$115 per night per room. If you pay US$ you do not need to pay taxes. The hotel location is in nice area and is close to Metro station. We booked city tour 4/5 hours through the Hotel front desk at Chilean Peso 18000 (about US$36).

Transfer between Valparaiso and Santiago we arranged with a prive tour company with a wine tour included.

 

Also it's nice to just stay at Valparaiso.

Here's what you need to consider. Your hotel will probably include transfers from the Santiago Airport to the Hotel (it's about a 30 minute drive) but more importantly from the Santiago Hotel to the Cruise Ship Terminal in Valparaiso (90 minute or more drive). So, factor that in. In many places we do the hotel on our own but in some places we use the cruise line because of the convenience of the transfers. In Santiago, we just the cruise lines hotels. Verify if transfers are included and if they are I would go with the cruise line.
