RCCL Freeport Excursions?

I would like some help - I am leaving in 18 days (yea!) and am not sure about the Freeport stop. Should I take one of the cruiseline sponsered tours, or is it safe to venture out on my own? I understand that you have to take a taxi from the pier, but is that generally what people do? I was interested in the catamaran cruise to the shopping area, and was wondering if anyone had any feedback on that. Thanks!
