alfally Posted January 14, 2008 #1 Share Posted January 14, 2008 For those who have been to either or both, what are the pros and cons? We're trying to decide which to visit while we're there. Thanks!
alfally Posted January 20, 2008 Author #2 Share Posted January 20, 2008 No one has been to either place?! Let me know if you've visited either (or both) beaches, and what you thought... Thanks!
LkMichigan beach bum Posted January 20, 2008 #3 Share Posted January 20, 2008 :) We have been to this beach and snorkeling area several times. Good snorkeling, beach chairs free ( we purchased beers from the local vendor) easy access to water, showers, restroom clean, food available, trees at the waters edge ( necessary on a hot day) a beach is available to the left of the drive entrance. Sand fleas are seasonal. Fleas on our Dec trip but not at all during our April trip. Bring spray just in case. Snorkeling is worth a spray or 2. We have always used Victor to take us to the area as part of a island tour for the day. We are returning in late Feb 08 and are again looking for transportation to just this beach or another snorkeling area. Bev
SeaPA1 Posted January 22, 2008 #4 Share Posted January 22, 2008 The beach area itself is, imho, much nicer at West Bay Beach. It's 1/2 mile, maybe 3/4 a mile, of very nice, tree-lined beach. The beach at Half Moon Bay is much smaller, without the palm trees & vegetation lining it (there's some but not as much). The snorkeling is very good both places. The reef is a little closer at West Bay, but it's an easy swim to it at Half Moon Bay, also. As for what type of sealife you come across, it's a roll of the dice since fish tend to swim. West Bay will likely be more crowded on a cruiseship day.
clearlakecruisers Posted January 22, 2008 #5 Share Posted January 22, 2008 Just returned from a Voyager of the Seas cruise that included Roatan. We got off the ship, and started asking the NUMEROUS cab drivers what they charged round-trip to the Mayan Princess resort on West Bay Beach and found one who said $40 ($10/pp). The ride to the resort took about 15 minutes. We paid $10/pp at the front desk for the use all of the facilities for the day. It is a beautiful place with a great pool, beautiful beach, clean rest rooms, restaurant/bar, massages on the beach, and lots of lounge chairs in either the sun or shade. We got there 10-11AM and the place was not crowded at all. Later on there were definitely more people but you could still get a lounge chair. We had a wonderful day. At the end of the day, our cab driver was there to meet us and take us back to the ship. We gave him $25 for the trip to the resort and $25 when we got back to the ship.
