Possible Family Cruise

We are considering taking our 4 boys on a cruise to either Hawaii or Alaska - 3 of them are in college and one is only 13 so going in the summer months would be easier on our schedules. I am also thinking a cruise might be more economical than just going to Hawaii. My question is: what cruise lines with Hawaii itineraries are best for teens (13 - 19); do any of them go in the summer (most of the ones I've seen seem to be in the spring or fall). Any recommendations? Thanking all of you in advance

There are two NCLA ships that have 7 night itineraries year round cruising the Hawaiian islands. If you want to cruise from the mainland or perhaps the South Pacific, you will have to go with a roundtrip cruise from the west coast, or a repositioning cruise.

None of these happen in the summer months, except for the NCLA cruises, sad to say. RCCL has a couple of repositioning cruises in May and September. Celebrity and HAL have 15 day round trip cruises at Christmas which may work for your family. Princess has several cruises throughout the year, including Christmas too.

Each cruise has a slightly different itinerary. Be aware that the roundtrip cruises from the mainland will only spend about 4 days in the islands.

You know your own kids better. Teens like to be around other teens but of course will have each other to hang out with.

Hawaii and Alaska are both great destinations. Hawaii cruises are probably going to attract younger passengers- so NCLA might be the way to go. I work with a 20 something who did that cruise and loved it. However, my 46 year old sister and 62 year old brother in law hated NCLA. They are big fans of Norwegian but this particular ship they didn't like at all. No casino was part of it but they just didn't like island hopping in this manner and wished they had stayed at one of the resorts on an island.

Alaska may be more interesting for boys than Hawaii. It just depends on their interests.

Of the two- I would prefer to cruise to Alaska than Hawaii. I would prefer to stay at a resort in Hawaii and take advantage of long leisurely days there, great food and drinks. That has been my experience with Hawaii- you do get what you pay for there. Things seem expensive but hotels and restaurants are really good.

Our very favorite vacation destination of all is Hawaii. We love cruising but cruising to Hawaii just doesn't have any appeal. If I were going to Hawaii we know we want to stay there - enjoy long leisurely days on an island of choice.

I'd choose to cruise to Alaska and vacation in Hawaii. Get a condo on the beach somewhere.

Good luck. I don't think you'd go wrong with either choice! (my kids range from 2 - 22). We're planning Alaska next year!
