Rare shipshape sam Posted January 22, 2008 #2 Share Posted January 22, 2008 Looking for good safe shore excursions for family of 5 ranging from 13 to 60 in san juan and st marteen Disclaimer: Nothing is 100% safe: We have enjoyed seeing the French side of St. marteen. We have taken a taxi and just walked around to get the flavor of the French side of the shops and the beach. You will dock on the Dutch side of St. Maartin. As for San Juan, we have gone to El Moro which is the fort that guards the entrance to the harbor in San Juan. It also allows you to walk through old San Juan. We have walked through old San Juan during the day and with at least a group of 4 adults. We were never afraid, but we did pay attention to our suroundings. The fort is great for kids with the cannon balls, cannons and views.
AMommyof2 Posted January 22, 2008 #3 Share Posted January 22, 2008 We rented a car in St. Maarten and drove to the French side of the island. The car rental places are just off the cruise ship pier and the prices were reasonable. We paid about $40 for a walk up rental, for the day. Just be sure to watch for the locals on the roads. They are more familiar with the area and made us a little nervous at times. But, I think that added to the fun of the adventure. It was really nice having the freedom of our own transportation. When we were in San Juan, we just walked around and explored on our own. We took the free shuttle up to Castillo de San Christobal. Then walked on up to El Morrow. Our 3 year old was too tired to walk back to the ship, so we caught a taxi back for $4 per person. We plan to go to El Yunque Rain Forrest on our return trip in June.
