We are cruising from San Pedro in October and the info I have gathered is this. You can stay at an LAX hotel and get a free shuttle, but you will have to make transportation arrangements to sightsee and to get to the cruise terminal the next day. Or you can get a hotel in San Pedro and they will shuttle you to the port on sailing day, but you will make other arrangements the day you fly in and such. The San Pedro area is in LA suburbs, Long Beach, 3* will get you Sheraton or Marina hotel. We received the latter and I will be glad to let you know how the hotel is once we return. We are taking a limo service, however an SUV (not light packers and there are 4 of us) to the hotel from LAX. You could stay at LAX and do the same the next day to San Pedro and that would leave you closer to Universal the first day. Hope this helps, maybe some LA people will se this and give you more detailed info. Good luck!

Universal City is 32 miles from San Pedro so you might consider renting a car at the airport and staying the night at Universal. I just looked on Orbitz and looks like you can get a van or SUV for $46 - 54/day. You can pick it up at LAX or drop if off in San Pedro.

After you get your vehicle you can tour Los Angeles on your own. (Get maps and a tour book at AAA). Basically, you take the 105 E from LAX, get on the 110 N go past downtown LA (see the LA Coliseum - host to two Olympics, Staples Center, LA City Hall etc from freeway), get on the 101 West to Hollywood (get off on Highland, go south to Hollywood Blvd, turn right, see Graumann's, H'wood Walk of Fame, Kodak Theatre, etc). From there you can get back on the 101 go West to Lankershim (Universal City).

If you don't want to stay at Universal, there are many nice areas just south of LAX - El Segundo, Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach, Hermosa Beach (collectively called the South Bay) with lots of hotels. Many on or near the water. Manhattan and Hermosa each have a pretty pier with lots of restaurants and shops.

October should be great weather!
