I have been scanning the boards trying to find an answer, but no luck. I will be on Carnival Fantasy (March 3-8). I will probably try a mixed drink from time-to-time, but will mostly be downing Bud Light. What should I expect to pay per beer?

 

Also, what are the ``general'' prices on the mixed drinks?

Usually a mixed drink ran me around $6.04 which included the gratuity. There are certain margarita specials for $3.75 if you pay attention to the Capers. One is the first night in the piano bar on Deck 8 in the atrium.

Too much! But, I buy them and drink them anyway:p

 

You can also buy a bucket and save $.25 per beer. The bucket consists of 4 beers in a plastic bucket filled with crushed ice.

Actually, Carnival has announced an 8.5% "hops surcharge" effective 3/31/2008. The surcharge will be applied to all drinks not just beer.

The quick answer is yes. I just tried ordering hops for an English ale I am brewing and had to settle for an American substitute. I can do that because I don't have customers used to a certain flavor, aroma, etc. Since hops are an essential part of beer, you cannot substitute at will.

All this means that most beer prices will likely increase. Since most American breweries have contracts with hops farmers guaranteeing price and availability, micro-breweries will be hardest hit. Still, the overall harvest of hops was way down last year, so overall production of beer will be down this year. Supply and demand -- expect to pay more, especially if/when breweries start running out of hops towards harvest time in September. I would speculate that prices for some microbrews will exceed $10 a six by end of summer.

For anyone interested, many hops farmers gave up on hops in the last few years due to a glut of hops on the market. Drought, hail storms, and decreased production have caused an international shortage. Personally, I am already looking into purchasing hops rhizomes for my garden, but it usually takes 2 seasons for hops to produce, so unless farmers have already planted last year, be prepared to pay higher prices through next year. :(

I have a few hops in my backyard. They grow like weeds and provide excellent shade as well. No hop shortage at my house!!!
