Liquor in Checked Luggage

we put a half gallon of seagrams 7 (plastic bottle) in our checked luggage no problem. i wire tied all my luggage before we left and had a pair of nail clippers in my back pack to cut once i got my luggage in my room so i knew no one had been through my luggage. i did hear a lot of people in the hallway from our room talking about some got their booze and some didnt but the ones that didnt get theirs tried to carry it on in there carry on bag. i say try it what do you have to lose? just a bottle no biggie to me its worth the try. like i said we had no problems. LOL well except one. DH was not going to run back and forth to the room to make a drink so we actually hardly drank from the bottle he just bought drinks where ever we were at. so with that i suggest you have some kind of flask or something to have a little in if you are wanting to mix drinks without running to the room all the time.

On our last cruise our smallest suitcase was the heaviest.

It had a bottle of rum, a bottle of bailey's, a boxed red, and a boxed white wine.

Champagne was carried on.

No problem. Just our experience.

The cabin stewards always seem to appreciate the offer of the leftover wine. We took the rum and bailey's with us at the end for our post cruise stay.

y not just bring your own food and coffee too!?!?!?!?

Maybe 'yall can get Carnival to give 'ya a discount!?!?!?

Here we go... Kettle corn or extra butter.........

I'd smuggle my booze on needing a forklift to load it if I could get-a-way with it.

Just one bottle.... Unless you are on NCL.. that is no big deal. Bring two, one for yourself and one to share!

No discount from Carnival here Dick.

All I got from your beloved Carnival was a fuel surcharge!!!!! Take that back to your ivory tower.

Same old whiners..can't let it go... can you, spud.

Why don't you stay in your hole and shine your halo when threads like this come out ?

...this thread is for the trouble makers

For the OP...we fly in the day before, go booze shopping and pack it in the extra suitcase we bring. The suitcase is a little bigger than a carry on and rugged. We use this suitcase, on the return home, for any souveniers or other crap we buy.

I pack bubble wrap and packing tape to keep the smuggled booze safe and sound. Check the bag, pack it with care, and it will get to your room without problems.

For those who think smuggling is wrong and immoral...I will toast you with my smuggled booze during sail away.

We just order a bottle of Absolute through the gift department and they will have it in your room when you arrive. You can't order it on line, you must call. Carnival will also allow you to bring a couple of bottles of wine on board. Hope this helps.

I plan on sneaking on a bottle or two, I know they let you bring a bottle of wine oe champange, but i don't like either. maybe it's my simple country boy roots but i will drink mostly beer or our trip and maybe a few glasses or wiskey or burbon, so i will make sure that jack and jim are nestled safely in one of my bags along with some coke

I post again....

I am still not sure why this continues to be limited to booze on cruise ships. Would someone on here please expand on this a bit for me?

Has someone discovered a good way to smuggle a good cut of beef into Ruth's Chris Steak house so I can enjoy all of the atmosphere they offer, yet not pay the confiscatory prices they charge for a meal? I really can't afford to go to Ruth's Chris as often as I like so I could justify my actions by saying they are robbing me because steak is so much less expensive at the supermarket.

I do understand this...........I think why people feel it's ok is because the cruise ship is like a hotel.....In a hotel you are always allowed to bring your own liquor in your guestroom. Of course you can not walk around the lobby and other public areas with your own booze. But in your room it is ok. I believe that when you are in your own stateroom that it should be ok to drink your own liquor. I know that is against Carnival rules - and I have not decided exactly what I personally am going to do in 2 weeks....but I think the rules should change where you can have your own liquor in your stateroom. Just MHO. Thanks.

For us its not a matter of saving a buck here or there its the fact of being able to pour a drink in the cabin while getting ready for the night. We often go to Vegas and looking at the drink prices it not that much different on the cruise. I dont know if we're just using to paying that amount for a drink we just do it. Trust me when we vacation we go all out and the $ isn't an issue.

I'm cruising next month and plan on bringing a bottle for that very reason.

Why not just ignore the threads that CLEARLY do not apply to you. Your post does not answer the OP's question, so it adds no value to this thread.

To the OP, it has not been a problem in the past.

It is not the same thing. Ruth’s Chris and other top of the line steak houses have

available to them a quality of beef that is not available to the general public. Go

ahead and try to buy the quality of beef available to Ruth's Chris and such, you

won't find it. Forget a grocery store, and it is the rare butcher shop that can get it.

I have a couple of classic Jags, it is not uncommon at all for me to supply the part needed for the repair shop to install to repair the vehicle. In addition, on my new Jag I use Mobile1 and the Jag dealership has no issue with me supplying the oil for them to use for the oil change. Note: I said JAG DEALERSHIP has no problem with it. To take it a step further they do sell Mobile1, but at about 3X what I can buy it for and yet they still are ok with me supplying my own oil for the oil change.

Ever take food onto a plane, a sandwich. Chips, candy etc? How about if your next flight the airline said, no bringing food of any type or kind on board, you MUST buy the food we offer or go without.

Again, Back to Ruth’s Chris, when I go there I am buying FOOD. When I sail Carnival or Princess etc I am buying a CRUISE. I am not going on a cruise to buy alcohol. I may if I choose, but that is not the reason I am spending money with the cruise line. If you point is valid regarding “smuggling” booze would it not also be the same regarding photographs onboard the ship? What if the cruse line took and held your camera until you left the ship on port days. Thus not allowing you to take you own photos while onboard ship. If you wanted a photo while onboard the ship, you had to use a ship photographer, would you be ok with that? Would you still say people who “smuggled” on a camera were thieves, cheap, classless, immoral etc?

Regarding smuggling booze, we search out Costco’s that are near the port we are sailing from whenever possible. We avoid if at all possible packing the booze in our checked luggage when we fly. The weight, hassles, it is not worth it.

By the way, the prices at Ruth's Chris, I don’t find that bad. Nor do I find the prices for the booze on CCL cruise ships (Carnival, Princess, HAL etc.) out of line. I take, I "Smuggle" my own booze on because there are times when I want a drink and don’t want to hassle with leaving my balcony/cabin or deal with room service or the limited selection of a mini bar. Even with my smuggled booze, my bar tab is still a good amount of money.

One last thing, on my last big cruise I took chips and cards and got a pretty good sized Texas hold’em game going in my suite, and yes, it was for cash. Not outrageous amounts but it was not chump change either. The cruise line did not get a cut, as they would have if we had played in the casino? So was that stealing?

From your experience, if you put 1 bottle of vodka in your checked luggage, will it get through, or will Carnival find it?

On our Nov 07 cruise on the Spirit we put two bottles of wine (1 in each suitcase) when we got to our room there was a note and we had to go and collect that suitcase. We were asked what was in our case and I said a bottle of wine and they immediately charged me the $15 corkage fee. They didnt find the other bottle of wine or the 2 bottles our friends brought. I think it was definitely a hit or miss. They wrapped their bottles in clothing and we didnt.

I always pack a bottle of bourbon in my checked luggage, they never stock my brand(Old Charter)...just put it in a plastic bottle insid a ziplock bag, roll inside a couple of t-shirts and pack in the middle of your suitcase...then a 12 pack of sprites in my carry-on and I'm set...Dennis

I'm sure you would have no problem smuggling beef. ;)

when you smuggle beef you can hide it in you checked luggage. or if you have a big brass set of you know what, you can go for broke and try to get it on in your carry on luggage. just for kicks you could put it in a pants pocket and see what happens (grinning )

i know some will have a beef with this reply

but dont have a cow over it

sorry i was milking the reply. (grin)

They should not have charged you for this...the carnival web-site states:

"Guests are prohibited from bringing alcoholic beverages onboard. However, guests (21 years and older only) may bring one bottle of wine or champagne per person on board only during embarkation at the beginning of the cruise. A $10 corkage fee per bottle will be charged should you wish to consume this wine in the dining room or a $14 corkage fee per bottle in the Supper Club."

If you were going to enjoy the wine in your room, they should not have charged you anything.

I thought you were only charged the corkage fee if you consumed the alcohol in the dining room. From the Carnival FAQs:

A $10 corkage fee per bottle will be charged should you wish to consume this wine in the dining room or a $14 corkage fee per bottle in the Supper Club. Guests may bring a small quantity of non-alcoholic beverages."

It doesn't seem fair that they held your wine hostage.

Earthgirl..I just replied with the same comment..haha. I am going on the Celebration in April and taking wine for our room. I hope I don't have to deal with that drama.

That's the same reason I looked into it. I want to take champagne, but I sure don't want to be charged to drink it in my room.

i dont know why some people get so freaking out of whack about people smuggling booze on board or even talking about it for that matter. ok you dont do it ok great but dont look down on everyone that does. i mean dang some people can afford to spend all they want and some people can't. does this make them less of a person NO is does not. i know myself i can afford it but some times you want a drink in your room and who wants to keep running to the nearest bar to get drink to bring back to their room. it doesnt make a person bad because they want to hang in their room and have a few drinks and not spend a fortune doing and running back and forth to some place to have a little fun in the privacy of their own room. to me its no different than having a hotel room and having few drinks. why some people make such a big deal of it is beyond...opps maybe i shouldnt have posted this as i am having a few drinks now. why is it some people have the need to be rude with others???? i see this everyday in day to day life and i do NOT get it at all.

let me tell ya i can pretty much go buy what i want when i want no worries and i am SOOO very fortunate and know this believe growing up poor and having A LOT now but guess what i do not try to be more than i am..a human i dont not give a rat %^&5 how much you hav eor do not have we are all equal so stop trying to be all high and mighty making a big over someone bring booze on board to save money. no one is any better than the next and its time for people to realize that. ..i've never gotten in all the years of message boards some people feel the need to be rude with other people. i guess the ones that are rude with others are just so misrable in life they have nothing better to do.. like i said i might not should have responded to this after having a nice evening and a few drinks to many maybe but dang all the smart A$$es need to get a life and a little happiness and stop juding others for of all things bringing booze on a ship @@@ get over it and have some fun and live a little geeze.....on that note to all the good hearted nice people out there in cruise critic world have a wonderful night :)

We always take champagne to drink on the balcony or in our room. We have never had a problem taking it on the ship (we pack it in our carry on) or being incorrectly charged a corkage fee. There is no way I would have let Carnival get away with charging me $15 to have a bottle of champagne or wine in my room.
