DD Posted January 28, 2008 #1 Share Posted January 28, 2008 I've been trying to read through the last 100 pages of posts. What can I say -- I'm catching up! Several people refer to a webpage that lists which flight-seeing operator has a permit to visit which site on a specific day (Anan Creek, Traitor's Cove, etc.). I'm specifically trying to figure out who can go to Traitor's Cove on a day in September. I've followed links that were posted but they all seem to dead-end in a "page not found" error message. Does anyone have a current link? Also, would you still agree that, in early September, Traitor's Cove is my best shot for seeing bears? We're doing a northbound on the Coral Princess on Sept 1. Ports are Ketchikan, Skagway, & Juneau. From what I've read, it seems that Ketchikan with an excursion to Traitor's Cove is my best opportunity to see bears. ARBORGUY Posted January 28, 2008 #2 Share Posted January 28, 2008 We're on Island Princess southbound leaving Whittier on 8/18 and will be in Ketchican on 8/23. Based on recommendations here and my own research we are using Island Wings to go to Traitor's Cove. www.islandwings.com When I called them about the bear watching options they said that Traitor's Cove was the place to go after mid-August. Good luck!! Bill
fti Posted January 28, 2008 #3 Share Posted January 28, 2008 If the boards continue to be this slow, I won't be posting as much!! Anyway, September is not good for Anan so Traitors Cove is probably the best option. Unfortunately with all my research on bear watching, Traitors is probably the one with the least information. Here are some floatplane operators - you would have to contact them directly to see if they have permits, have availability, etc. Southeast Aviation and Island Wings are mentioned a lot on this board and Seawind is supposed to be flying again soon. http://www.taquanair.com/ http://www.alaskaseaplanetours.com/ http://southeastaviation.com/ http://www.seawindaviation.com/ http://www.familyairtours.com/ http://islandwings.com/ http://www.taquanair.com/ http://www.alaskaseaplanetours.com/ John
DD Posted January 28, 2008 Author #4 Share Posted January 28, 2008 Thanks -- I sent an email to Island Wings last Friday night. I'm waiting to hear back from them. They are my first choice; however, I'm reading that there's a website that shows which specific companies are allowed to fly on a given day to a given destination. Apparently, they can't just fly on any day to Traitor's Cove. The links to this website are down -- they all take me to pages that no longer exist. I'm looking for a current website to figure out if Island Wings can even take me on the date that we'll be in Ketchikan.

Wish I had more info. John
mdeane Posted January 29, 2008 #6 Share Posted January 29, 2008 Michelle of Island Wings told me she was applying for her permits on the first day they could apply. So I suppose that she has permits for any day that ships are in port. Only so many can go per day. We are going to Anan in July. Should be a highlight of our trip. Was Michelle's comments about applying for permits the first day they could apply mean for Traitors Cove or Anan? Anan permits have been available for operators/guides for months so I assume you meant Traitors. But since you mentioned Anan as well I am confused (happens pretty easily!).
