Is it impossible to find a hotel in Manhattan for under $300 in October? The rates seem high, but is that normal for the area.

 

Last time we left from Newark, we stayed in New Jersey and took the train over. Big mistake as it cost $$ and LOTS of time, so this time we are thinking of staying in Manhattan for 2 nights before we go out. But we can't seem to find a room under $300.

 

ANy suggestions, or would New Jersey be the best bet and finding a better way to go back and forth from New Jersey to Manhattan??
