Capri & Amalfi Coast - Carnival Tour

Recommended Posts

Has anyone taken the Capri & Amalfi Coast Tour offered by Carnival? Your opinions would be appreciated, it's pretty expensive, $249 per person. A description of the tour follows:

Visit two of the most famous places in Italy in one day – the breathtaking Amalfi Coast and beautiful Capri Island.

On this dual excursion you will:

Board a jetfoil for a 45-minute cruise to the wonderful island of Capri.

Take a funicular up to the center of Capri.

Follow your guide to the Augustus Gardens for a spectacular view over Marina Piccola and the Faraglioni rocks.

Spend some time on your own wandering around the numerous elegant boutiques and cafes.

Enjoy a tasty Italian Lunch served with wine at a local restaurant. Return down to the harbor by funicular.

Board a private motorboat for 1¼ hour cruise along the scenic Amalfi Coast.

Pass by the natural protected area of Ieranto Bay and the picturesque village of Positano.

Arrive at Amalfi, situated at the mouth of a deep gorge along the coast.

Follow your guide into Amalfi’s main square. Stop to see the magnificent façade of the 12th century cathedral.

Enjoy some time on your own to explore this famous maritime village and take photographs.

Drive above the hills of the Amalfi Coast and the motorway for approximately

1½ hours back to your ship.

Visit the cameo factory if time permits.

Thanks.

The trouble with this day, as with so many cruise trips to the Naples area, is that it is simply too ambitious.

You'll miss the best bits of Capri - which are not to be found in the centre of Capri Town (at the top of the funicular) although the fact that your tour goes to the Augustus Gardens is better than some I've seen.

Then the rest of the day seems rushed. Taking a boat from Capri to Positano is super - we honeymooned on Capri and chartered a boat to do a trip around Capri itself, and then over to Positano for a drink. That was a wonderful way to spend the day. I'm not sure it would be the same on a boat chartered by the cruise company.

Is this a once only trip to Europe? If so, then I suppose there is some merit in doing it this way. If not, choose one of the two areas, and do that rather more thoroughly. I think you'll find it more satisfying to see something properly rather than everying on a flying visit.

Whilst talking of Capri, it has to be said that day trippers never see the island at its best....... The time after about 5.00 pm when the last of the cruise passengers have gone, the sun is still shining and thoughts are turning to dinner is, I think, one of the glories of Capri.

Naples itself should not be forgotten.....

Hope this is of some help.

Kruzin & KindlyChap:

Thanks for the replies, it does seem like alot to fit into a few hours, but being on a cruise limits your options. We did Naples, Sorrento and Pompei on a previous land trip and thought we would get to Capri and the Amalfi Coast on this trip. We did consider doing just Capri on our own as a second option, but are concerned that a full day on Capri might be to much.

Thanks again.
