Where to buy snorkel gear

Murphy

Recommended Posts

I bought some great body glove snorkel gear at Sams Club last year. My friends are joining us on a Hawaiian cruise in a week and wanted to buy some too, but our Sams only has very large fin sizes.

Where can I buy snorkel gear on Kauai, preferably, but on Maui as an alternative. I know you can rent it at Snorkel Bob's, but my friend as a used snorkel tube phobia!

Maui - definitely Maui Dive Shop should have various snorkels, masks, and fins.

Kauai - not sure. I've never had to look for snorkel gear on Kauai since I bring my own.

I suppose looking for snorkeling gear in Illinois before you go is out of the question?

Is there a Sports Authority near you? That is where we got ours. They have large selection of brands, types & sizes.

I gotta recommend Snokle Bob's whihc is everywhere in Hawaii. We went to the one just north of Kihei in Kauai. I think they are probably more expsnive, but I love their masks and snorkles....partularly the masks for prescription wearers,

Thanks everyone. Spleen, actually I'm looking here in IL, but we are not exactly the snorkel capital of the world, therefore, difficult to find.

But I will try the Sports Authority, thanks Kim!

Don't feel bad, landlocked here in Kansas I can't find snorkle gear either. I am hoping I can find it on Kauai on our pre-cruise days. We don't have a sports authority anywhere that I know of.

Can't wait till 5/19/04 on the Wind

I agree about the Sports Authority - definitely a cheap option to get snorkel gear (if your local one carries)

Folks, there's a gazillion dive shops on the web, go to webcrawler.com or any search engine and type in "snorkel gear." Prices are very competitive, but search around, some have free delivery, some will charge for overnighting...

the problem is, if you buy your mask online, there's no way to check to see if it fits properly or not before you purchase ...

True Spleen, but the pre-packaged stuff at Sports Authority doesn't let you check either until you break open the package outside the store. Also, the dive shops have return/exchange options just like the local stores.

FYI, we bought our first set of snorkel gear at Sports Authority back in '96, got to Cozumel and found out the snorkel tube had a cardboard backflow valve that lasted..oh..all of ten minutes. I went on line prior to our 2000 cruise and got much better snorkel tubes for about the same price. Problem is, I can't remember the site - it was 4-years ago (also bought a multiple-use underwater camera).

All I'm suggesting is that the dive shops specialize in this gear, there are enough online sites to keep the prices competitive, and if the masks don't fit, folks can exchange them...it is an option for the land-locked folks...if they do it far enough in-advance.

aloha!!

I highly recommend going to a dive shop. My wife and I purchased our first set of gear from a dive shop about 15 years ago and, all except for my mask, all is still going strong. I wore it snorkeling and scuba diving and after 15 years it finally gave out.

The staff at dive shops know how things should fit, what will last for a long time and what gear they have had trouble with. They want to give you good advice because they would like to see you return for scuba lessons and equipment. That's what happened to me.

The dive shop probably has the ability to install prescription lenses too. Not just diopter adjusted lenses, but actual lenses made from the prescription from your optomitrist. So you can have bi-focals, progressive lenses, etc., that are custom made for you. My wife needed that and it was money well spent.

At first they may seem more expensive, but don't be shy. Ask for a package price if you buy everything then and now. You'll usually get a nice discount. I made a purchase yesterday that would have been about $800 under normal pricing. I asked for a package price and told them I was also thinking about similar gear from another dive shop. They knocked off $98 on the deal. Not a bad savings.
