Le Mer @ Halekulani

I was watching the travel channel recently and they featured the Le Mer restaurant. Does any one have any reviews to offer on this restaurant? How does it compare to the Pineapple Room? We'll be staying 3 days before and after at the HHV after our cruise on the POA. Read a lot of good restaurant reviews on this board, but was wondering if this one was worth adding to our list. Thanks.

We stayed there, but didn't eat there. Our favorite dining on Waikiki is the Ship's Tavern inside the Sheraton Moana Surfrider. The view is wonderful and the food is some of the best we've had anywhere. It IS expensive, but we felt it was so good, it was worth it! Check the Sheraton website...last year there was a great coupon for the Ship's Tavern. It really is not typical of Sheraton type food!!!!

I've actually talked about La Mer before on this board (though admittedly, it may be difficult to locate given the screwups with the messages on this board recently).

La Mer has the dubious distinction of being the most expensive meal that I've ever had. The food was excellent and the service was the best I've ever experienced in a restaurant ... but the value received may be somewhat questionable. The view is to die for though at sunset since it's located on the second floor of the building and has a great ocean view (from the right tables).

Comparing La Mer and the Pineapple Room is talking about two different categories. Alan Wong's more upscale restaurant, the eponymous Alan Wong's Restaurant, may be a better comparison to La Mer. You will certainly have better service and ambience at La Mer. There is no view at Alan Wong's really to speak of and the Pineapple Room looks out onto a parking lot. Food-wise though, I personally prefer Alan Wong's to La Mer. Pineapple Room has a similar concept as Alan Wong's though more casual and slt downscale ... may be a more affordable alternative as well.

Feel free to ask any follow up questions about this. Not sure if I explained things well enough or not.

Thank you Spleen for your review of La Mer. I was hoping to hear from someone who actually had dinner there to see if it was indeed worth going. I have a lot of notes from your restaurant reviews, Alan Wong's included. Thanks again!

Maryann - you certainly can't go wrong with either restaurant - you'll have a great time either way (though your wallet may be hurting afterwards)
